Dementia is not a specific disease but is rather a general term for the impaired ability to
remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities. Alzheimer’s
disease is the most common type of dementia. Though dementia mostly affects older adults, it is
not a part of normal aging.

The families who are taking care of Dementia Patients at home are taking the following steps:

 The family always do their research on the disease by their own to learn about the disease
and its treatment. They consult with their physician so that they can properly take care of
their loved ones.

 At a point, when an individual advances from the gentle phase of dementia to the moderate
phase, the family who is taking care of the patient , roll out certain improvements inside the
home to reduce fall risks. With a little effort and patience, they provide their loved ones with
all of the comforts at home, plus an additional level of wellbeing.

 A family always honest while explaining the disease to their children because children are
very intuitive. They will know that the behavior of their elders changing. They encourage and
engage their children to be a part of care giving process. Because of this, the family will also
be less stressed when the situation is discussed out in the open.

 The family is helping them with activities of daily living, like bathing, dressing, and eating
especially during late stage dementia, when someone may violently refuse these necessary
activities.

 When the family is taking care of the patient at home and spends time with the person with
dementia can quickly become the focus of attention for the household.. A family member
stays with their loved one’s and bring special activities so it is a fun evening for him or her as
well.
