The Indian Navy would soon come out with the tender for over Rs 50,000
crore project to build six indigenous conventional submarines but they
would not be fitted with the indigenous Air Independent Propulsion
system that is being developed by the DRDO.

The air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology enhances the underwater

endurance and stealth of conventional submarines who otherwise have to
come on the surface to use oxygen to recharge their batteries. The
Defence Acquisition Council headed by Rajnath Singh recently cleared
around Rs 50,000 crore project codenamed P-75 India for the Indian Navy
to move ahead with the construction of six new conventional
diesel-electric submarines within the country.

Chinese soldiers and some civilians appeared on the other side of the
Sindu river in the Demchuk region of Ladakh and displayed banners and
Chinese flag in protest when Indian villagers were celebrating the
birthday of the Dalai Lama. The incident occurred on July 6.

The Chinese, comprising Army personnel and civilians, came in five

vehicles and raised banners near the village community centre where the
Dalai Lama’s birthday was being celebrated. Last week, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi greeted the Dalai Lama on the occasion of his 86th
birthday. This is the first time Narendra Modi has publicly confirmed
speaking with the Dalai Lama since he took over as prime minister in 2014.

India’s push to achieve industrial self-reliance has resulted in the

government approving $51.71 billion worth of new defense projects and
twice implementing arms embargoes. The new defense projects falls under
the country’s Make in India economic scheme, according to the Ministry
of Defence, which has also passed two “positive indigenisation” lists
totaling 209 items (the first list had 101, and the second had 108).
The first list of 101 defense items was released by the MoD in August
2020. It included several types of armaments such as artillery guns,
assault rifles, corvettes, sonar systems, transport aircraft,
ammunition, sonars, radars, conventional diesel-electric submarines,
communication satellites and shipborne cruise missiles.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and Peoples’ Democratic Party
(PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti hit out at the Central government on Monday
over the economy of the Union territory and the recent dismissal of
government employees.

She said abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution that granted

special status to the erstwhile state seemed to have been carried out to
rob Jammu & Kashmir of its resources. “It seems the only motive behind
the abrogation was to loot J&K. People from outside are being given top
positions at Chenab Valley Power Projects. Our water and electricity are
going outside. Our transporters are in trouble. They have to pay toll
taxes and more,” the PDP chief, who is on a tour of the region, was
quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

What India should do in Afghanistan

<https://idrw.org/what-india-should-do-in-afghanistan/>

SOURCE: HT

With the withdrawal, for justified security reasons, of home-based

personnel from its Kandahar consulate, India’s footprint in Afghanistan
has shrunk further. The Jalalabad and Herat consulates have not had
Indian officials for over a year by now. All three are, thus,
effectively non-functional because representational offices are not
merely visa application collection centres. If the Taliban begin to
threaten Mazar-e-Sharif, the consulate there too will have to
operationally shut down.

All this would be to Pakistan’s immense satisfaction. It actively

lobbied Afghan authorities in 2002 against granting permission to India
to open consulates in the country. Pakistan argued that the nature and
potential of India-Afghan relations did not justify an extensive Indian
presence. It asserted that Indian consulates would be utilised to foment
problems in its territory. Pakistani well-wishers in the Afghan system
supported its views. It took deft diplomatic handling to overcome the
misgivings of some top Afghan leaders to get permission open the consulates.

As British billionaire Richard Branson and his fellow travellers return

from their 90-minute suborbital flight onboard the Virgin Galactic VSS,
he can take satisfaction in beating his rival, Jeff Bezos by a few days.
However, Bezos is unlikely to be very bothered as he launches into an
even higher altitude on July 20 with three other passengers, including
his brother.

This billionaire space race makes for an entertaining spectacle but it

is simply one manifestation of a broader phenomenon: the increasing
privatisation of space activity. The rise of commercial space enterprise
comes at a time when humans are more dependent on space than they have
ever been before. As citizens, we’re directly dependent on
constellations of satellites orbiting over us, whether we’re hailing
cabs, watching sports on our televisions, or checking the weather forecast.

India’s last frontier <https://idrw.org/indias-last-frontier/>

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s brief stopover in Tehran on

July 7 has taken place at a time of great volatility in regional
politics. Unfortunately, India has to adjust to a rapidly changing
situation in regional politics as a mere observer with hardly any role
as participant to mould the flow of events to meet our needs optimally.
Nonetheless, the geopolitical currents around Iran do not, and will not,
leave India untouched; nor can New Delhi hope to remain impervious to
the downstream realignments that are to be expected, from a long-term
perspective.

Broadly speaking, Jaishankar has kept himself busy on the diplomatic

circuit in the West, delivering lectures on the emerging world order,
whenever opportunities arose. Foreign interlocutors politely listen to
India’s erudite minister. But wouldn’t they know India’s influence or
capacity to navigate regional politics has waned lately?

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has opposed the Union Territory
administration’s decision to sack terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen chief
Syed Salahuddin’s sons. They were among 11 employees who have been
sacked by the Jammu and Kashmir government.

Mehbooba Mufti said, “How can sons be persecuted over the actions of his
father? No enquiry has been conducted.” “I’ve said this again and again,
you can capture a man but not an idea. You’ve to address the idea, as
Vajpayee ji [referring to former Atal Bihari Vajpayee — 1998-2004] did.
Witch-hunting, criminalisation of dissent is taking our nation back,”
Mehbooba Mufti said.

How PM Nehru mishandled China

Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure as independent India’s first Prime Minister

(PM) was marked by an intense engagement, in different forms, with
China. From the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in
1949 till his death in 1964, Nehru’s approach evolved from being
trusting and having an almost fatal attraction for China to being
ambivalent to finally turning hostile.

In a recent book, /Nehru Tibet and China,/ based on extensive archival

work and examination of official documents, including highly classified
ones accessed for the first time, I have attempted to capture Nehru’s
tryst with China.

Watching the pomp and grandeur of the events marking the centenary of
Chinese Communist Party that culminated in a major speech delivered by
CCP general secretary Xi Jinping before a 70,000-strong crowd on 1 July
at the Tiananmen Square in Beijing, it is difficult to escape the
conclusion that the impressive performance was as much a grand
celebration as a geopolitical missive. This was China telling the world
that it has arrived.

The awe-inspiring choreography and stunning visuals were meant to

express efficiency, control and order against the chaos of democracies.
The CCP was perhaps trying to prove that one-party states do not lack in
vitality or vivacity. But the Chinese president had a lot to convey of
his own. Xi’s hour-long, extraordinary address gave us a glimpse into
the way the party perceives itself, the direction towards which it wants
to take China and Xi’s personal ambitions.
