The work of developing Inter national Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental ‘and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the ISO Council, International Standard ISO 4386/2 was develoed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 123, Plain bearings, and was circulated to the member bocies in March 1979, {thas been approved by the member bodies of the following countries Bulgaria Italy Spain Chile Korea, Rep. of Sweden Czechoslovakia Libyan Arab Jamahiriya Turkey Egypt, Arab Rep. of Netherlands United Kingdom France New Zealand USA Germany, F.R. The test can be applied to multilayer plan bearings with baokings of steel, cast iron, or copper alloys and with beating metals based on lead, tin, copper, oF aluminium with layer thicknesses of > 2 mm. ‘The test is suitable for production control as well as for com parative investigations into the influence on the bond strength, Of various processes and types of materia For non-destructive ultrasonie testing of the bond between bearing metal and backing for bearing matal layer thicknesses, > 2mm, s00 ISO 4386/1, 2. Froax 5)” The auberot Ch refers to the test mathod proposed by Chalmers. 4 Test equipment Compressive or tensile testing machine with apparatus in ac- ‘cordance with figuras 2 or 3 NOTE ~ Within 5 yeat it shel be decided which of the wo testing machines i to be prefered, By means of careful adjustment of the apparatus, it shall be en- ‘sured that the force is acting vertically to the bond surface in forder to avoid incorrect measurements. 5 Specimen preparation ‘Specimens from a journal bearing (curved sliding surfaco) or a thrust bearing (plane sliding surface) are manufectured in accordance with the table. Care has to be taken at the shoulders adjacent to the joint of the spacimen that the bond surfaoe ie unencumberad for 0,1 mm atthe inside as well as at tho outside of the bearing as shown in figure 1. 6 Operation ‘The apparatus as shown in figure 2 or 3is mounted on the com- pressive or tensile testing machine in such a way that the force acts vertically to the bond surface. Subsequent, the spacimen is locked into the apparatus. The force is steadily increased un til the spacimen fractures, The maximum force is read from the testing apparatus. The increase in stress should be at about 10 N/mm2s. Specimens are only avaluated when the fracture has occurred in the bond surface rin the bearing metal. Existing bond defects have to be noted. ‘The characteristic limiting value of layer thickness for the ab- solute bond strength is @ property of the bearing metal ‘The thickness of the bearing metal layar as from which the ab solute bond strength is measured, is included in ISO 4381 for standardized Pb and Sn alloys. This value must be determined {oral alloys in a series of tests with different thicknesses ofthe bearing material layers. NOTE — For layer thicknesses of the bearing metal above the character iting vale, the bond strength is independant of the layer thickness ands termed absolute bond strength wheres, for aer thicknesses below this imiting value, i has Been established ex Derimently that it eropsnesdly tothe vale 270 and, inthis ange, termed relative bond strength (see Figure 4. “This gives rie to the evaluation procedure 8) layer thickness > liming valve ‘The value found is compared recy with the absolute valuo ofthe bond strength by layer thickness < limiting vate [As shown in figure 4.98 an example, the valve found is converted Into the real value of the bond stength anc compared wit the ab solute value of the bond strength Lmitg valve Ren; = Moaaurod value a the range Rena = Value of te absolute bond 438 PT 2-82 J 4451903 on3aKnay 7 z 8 Designation With reference to this part of ISO 4386, the tensile test (ropresented by 7) isto be indioated in the following order, for ‘example fora test surface of 100 mm2 Test 1S0 4386 — T 100 9 Test report {A tost report on the result of the testis (by agreement) to be ‘rawn up, In the test report the following are to be indicated a). a reference to this part of ISO 4386; number of specimens; }_ dimensions and materials of the plain bearing: 4 layor thickness of the bearing metal for the test; €} test surface used; ‘maximum force applied unt fracture ofthe specimen;
