OVERNIGHT OVERSIZE PARKING PERMIT
GUIDELINES
An Overnight Oversize parking permit must be displayed between the hours of 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Permits
for overnight parking of oversized vehicles in residential areas are subject to the provisions set forth by Santa
Monica Municipal Code 3.12.900.
Documentation Required:
 Permit application form completed in full
 Proof of residency at a Santa Monica address
 The original or photocopy of the DMV registration for the vehicle for which a permit is being requested
Vehicle Specifications:
Permit shall be issued only for a noncommercial passenger vehicle, as defined by the Vehicle Code, which
together with any fixtures, accessories or property, except single post radio antennas:

 Exceeds a width of eight feet, a height of eight feet, or a length of twenty feet.
Review of Application:
Upon the filing of the application, the City may make such investigation as necessary to determine whether such
a permit should be issued. Review may require up to 5 days. In no event shall such a permit be issued where it is
determined that overnight parking of the vehicle would constitute a hazard to pedestrians, vehicular traffic or
enforcement of the law.
Placement of Permit:
Permit shall be visibly displayed on the rear-view mirror of the vehicle for which it is issued. You may be cited if
your permit is not displayed correctly. Permits that are displayed from the rear-view mirror must be removed
when the vehicle is in motion [CVC Section 26708(a)].
Number of Permits Allowed:
No more than one overnight parking permit may be issued in any thirty-day period for the parking of an
oversized vehicle at a single residence address.
Important notes:
 Applications and required documentation may be emailed to parking@smgov.net.
 Overnight Oversize parking permits are valid for use in residential areas only.
 An Overnight Oversize parking permit does NOT exempt you from other parking regulations such as
preferential parking restrictions, curb markings, alleys, meters, street sweeping, or anywhere else where
parking is prohibited.
 Overnight Oversize parking permits are NOT valid in beach lots, in City-owned lots/structures, or in
commercial areas.
 Vehicles parked in the same space for over 72 hours are subject to citation and/or tow [CVC Section
22651(k)].
 Permits are not transferrable. Individuals who have sold or transferred their permits may lose their
permit privileges.
 Permit holders must obey all posted signs, the California Vehicle Code, and the Santa Monica Municipal
Code.
 Overnight Oversize Permits are issued to residents free of charge.
