Introductory Message
Welcome to Earth and Life Science of Grade 11!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Earth and Life Science Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Earth and Life Science Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue
learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner,
carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer
the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedul

How Representative Animals Reproduce

I. Learning Competency with Code

• Describe the different ways of how representative animals reproduce.
Code: S11/12LT -IIej-15

II. Background Information for Learners

• Like plants, animals need to reproduce in order to increase the chance of the
perpetuation of their species. But unlike plants, there is an assumption that
animals reproduced only through the process of fertilization, or the fusion of
the sperm cell and egg cell. Actually, like plants, some animals also used
asexual or sexual or both methods of sexual reproduction.

• Sexual reproduction is the process of joining the haploid gametes (sex cells) to
form a diploid cell called a zygote. A zygote, eventually becomes an embryo
and later on develop into an organism. The female gamete is an egg cell, is
usually non-motile, to ensure survival of the embryo by storing energy. The
male gamete is a sperm cell, which is motile to search for the egg cell for
fertilization. In asexual reproduction, fusion of the egg cell and sperm cell does
not occur, reproduction is mainly through mitosis which creates a clone of the
parent.

III. Activity Proper

Directions:

• Read the Introduction of concepts carefully.

• Study and analyze the diagram.
• Answer the guide questions.
• Perform the following activities at home.

Introduction of Concepts:

The following are the different methods of asexual reproduction.

Method of Reproduction Description Examples
1. Budding Occurs when individuals arise Corals
throughout the outgrowths
from a parent. This can create a
colony of individuals attached
to a parent.

2. Fission The separation/division of an Animal-like

organism to form individuals of protists
approximately same size.
3. Fragmentation and Fragmentation is when an Sponges,
Regeneration animal’s body breaks into annelids,
1
`
different parts, which later cnidarians and
regenerate to form several tunicates
individuals
4. Parthenogenesis Is like apomixes (the process of Bees, wasps,
development of diploid lizards, sharks.
embryos without fertilization) in
plants, where the egg cell
develops without fertilization

Exercises / Activities
PRACTICE AND ENRICHMENT: Given the following scenarios, which method of animal
reproduction will best allow the survival of a particular species:
1. In an area devastated by a level 5 Typhoon
2. Rainforest
3. Desert
4. After an earthquake
5. Antarctica

Guide Questions

(Note: Since these are guide questions, the answers may be stated differently than what is
included in the answer keys.)

A. Describe the method of reproduction of the following groups of animals:

1. (Sample Answer): “Mollusks are primarily of separate sexes, and the reproductive organs
(gonads) are simple. Reproduction via an unfertilized gamete is also found among gastropods
of the subclass Prosobranchia. Most reproduction, however, is by sexual means. Eggs
and sperm are released into the water by members of some (primitive) species,
and fertilization occurs there.”

2. (Sample Answer): “Amphibians reproduce by laying eggs that do not have a soft skin, not a
hard shell. Most females lay eggs in the water and the babies, called larvae or tadpoles, live in
the water, using gills to breathe and finding food as fish do. As the tadpoles grow, they develop
legs and lungs that allow them to live on land”.

3. (Sample Answer) “ Most species of annelids can reproduce both asexually and sexually.
However, leeches can reproduce only sexually. Asexual reproduction may occur by budding or
fission. Sexual reproduction varies by species. In some species, the same individual produces
both sperm and eggs. But worms mate to exchange sperm, rather than self-fertilizing their own
eggs.”

B. Answer the following questions comprehensively:

1. (Sample Answer) “The most common methods of asexual reproduction are budding (a parent
cell splits into two identical daughter cells of the same size), fragmentation (occurs when a
4
`
parent breaks into fragments or pieces and each fragment develops into a new organism) and
budding (occurs when a parent forms a bubble-like bud which stays attached to the parent cell
while it grows and develops.)”

2. (Sample Answer): “Regeneration in fragmentation is important because in the event the

splitting occurs without the prior preparation of the organism, both fragments must be able to
regenerate the complete organism for it to function as reproduction.”

Reflection:

(Sample Answer): ““A conservationist could use their knowledge of animal reproduction to
provide protection for critical areas of habitat that certain animals need to reproduce. For
example, salmon need certain sizes of clean gravel in a stream bed to reproduce. Spotted owls
need a certain amount of old growth timber to successfully reproduce. Making sure that
animals have what they need to reproduce will help the species thrive.”
