LATERALLY LOADED WALLS WITH

PRE-COMPRESSION ENHANCEMENT

Design procedure for two-way spanning walls:

1. Establish support conditions

2. Check limiting dimensions, Annex F
3. Determine design pre-compression stress, sd
4. Determine design compressive strength of masonry, fd
5. Verify pre-compression enhancement to design flexural strength of masonry,
sd ≤ 0.2 x fd
6. Determine orthogonal ratio thus:

m = ( fxd1 + sd ) / fxd2
→ m = [( fxk1 / gM ) + sd ] / (fxk2 / gM )

7. Obtain bending moment coefficient, a1 (Annex E)

8. Calculate applied bending moment (MEd)
9. Calculate design moment of resistance thus:

MRd = ( fxd1 + sd ) x Z
→ MRd = [ ( fxk1 / gM ) + sd ] x Z

10. Verify that MEd ≤ MRd

Design procedure for vertically spanning walls, h/l <0.3:

1. Check limiting height, h ≤ 30tef
2. Determine design pre-compression stress, sd
3. Determine design compressive strength of masonry, fd
4. Verify pre-compression enhancement to design flexural strength of masonry,
sd ≤ 0.2 x fd
5. Calculate applied bending moment (MEd)
6. Calculate design moment of resistance thus:

MRd = ( fxd1 + sd ) x Z
→ MRd = [( fxk1 / gM ) + sd ] x Z

7. Verify that MEd ≤ MRd
