Have you ever heard of a Thaumatrope? A thaumatrope is an optical toy that was
popular in the 19th century. it is a disk with a picture on each side attached to two pieces
of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear
to blend into one due to the persistence of vision. We can also make a thaumatrope by
attaching two pictures to a stick which when rubbed between palms, creates the same
effect. Follow the instructions given below to make your own thaumatrope.
Supplies needed: Picture template given below, scissors, glue, a skewer or a straw
Instructions:
1. With the help of an adult, cut the picture template given below. Cut along the outer
rectangle. Do not separate the pictures.
2. Fold the rectangle along the dotted line. The picture should be on the outside.
3. Put a skewer between the folds and stick both the sides together with glue. It should

The zoetrope, or “wheel of life,” is an optical toy which creates the illusion of movement
from a series of still drawings or paintings in a band lining a rotating drum. Follow the
instructions below to make your own zoetrope.
You would need: cello tape, a pencil with eraser end, a paper plate or a
circular cardboard base, a small thumbtack
1. Cut out the two strips from the zoetrope template given below. Fold them along the
dotted lines. With the help of an adult, using a paper-knife, cut out each of the white
rectangles from both strips to create the viewing slits.
2. Tape both the sheets together into one large loop( with the pictures on the
inside of the loop), using cello tape. Do NOT let any tape fold over to the
inside.
3. Fix the loop in the center of a small paper plate or a circular cardboard
base using tapes on the outside. Poke a hole in the center of the plate and
using a thumbtack, carefully, fix it to the eraser end of a pencil.

Read the passage given below and fill in the events that took place, in the timeline.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. In his
youth he learned the religions of Hinduism and Jainism. During his years at school,
Gandhi was considered an average student. In 1887 he finished his studies at the
University of Bombay. He then moved to England to study law. He returned to India in
1891. He tried to start a law career, but he was unsuccessful. In 1893 Gandhi took a job
in a British colony in South Africa. There he saw Europeans mistreating Indian settlers. He
got into politics to fight for Indian rights.
Gandhi first used his method of nonviolent protest in 1906. He told Indians that they
should not obey British laws that they thought were wrong. He also said they should stay
peaceful no matter how they were punished for their actions. This new method of
protest became known as satyagraha, or “devotion to truth.”

Cut out each of the circles showing the constellations. Glue the circles to a thick sheet of
cardboard to make them sturdier. Once the glue is dry, use scissors to cut out the
constellation circles again. With the help of an adult, carefully pierce a hole in each
circle spot on the constellation circle using a pair of scissors or a push pin. Place the circle
inside the front edge of the flashlight so that the light shines through the pierced points on
the paper. In a dark room, shine the flashlight onto a wall so that you can see the points
of light creating the constellation. For each flashlight constellation, talk about what other
