Assess
Voice Care:
Drink a lot of water during the day. Avoid drinking beverages with caffeine - it dries the vocal chords. Use more recorded
music. Use a microphone when singing. If you need cough drops, use fishermen’s friends, not sweet cough drops Don’t
sing with the kids all the time. They actually sing better when you stop singing!!!
Clam up whenever possible! Don’t cough or clear your throat all the time. Doing that just SLAMS your vocal chords to-
gether. Try some relaxation techniques. Get lots of sleep. Try Echinacea when you feel trouble coming on. On musicplay-
online visit the vocal warmups section. You will find yoga for voice in the teacher’s instructions section. These are great
exercises to use to keep your voice healthy. Never delay seeing a specialist when your voice is your livelihood.
Assessment
My thoughts: I have found that short assessments of a single concept frequently gives me a much better picture of the
students achievement, than leaving assessment till the end of the term and giving a test. I try to assess at least one concept
each week. For example:
Week 1: assess pitch matching through attendance (2-3 minutes of class time)
Week 2: assess rhythm reading through flashcard attendance (4-5 minutes of class time)
Week 3: assess if they can identify high low pitches. Observe class doing this with eyes closed. (2-3 minutes)
Week 4: assess in-tune singing by hearing students sing within the entire class (4-5 minutes of class time)
My school has gone to a reporting system of Very Good, Good, Satisfactory, and Experiencing Difficulties. I use the abbre-
viations vg,g,s,e in my grade book, so that it’s easy to average them out at the end of a term. If a parent questions a grade,
I have a lot of data to back up my decision.
I assess participation as well, usually during a game that the kids know well enough to play on their own. In my grade book,
I note the date, and assess their level of participation using the same terminology. If they are enthusiastic and participating
using appropriate behavior they would receive a vg.
To assess singing in tune, I assess the solo pitch matching, but I also like to hear the children during a longer song. I played
a familiar song with CD accompaniment, had the children sing along, and then listened to each one for about 5 seconds and
recorded observations. I had to play the song twice for some large classes, but felt that it was well worth the time spent to
hear the children in this way. It was less threatening for some, than singing all by themselves.
The following checklists will give you some ideas of what to assess in grade 1. Choose the areas that you wish to assess
based on your curriculum - don’t try to assess every single area each term.
