ABSTRACT

Sound amplification is required for variety of reasons. It has many applications in

our day to day life. There are a variety of sound amplification techniques and each

technique is employed depending on where and what kind of environment we are

present. In this project of designing an audio amplifier system, first we studied the

need for sound amplification and the basic block diagram of a sound system and its

individual blocks. Microphones: their principle, different types, their working and

equivalent SPICE models are followed. Thereafter, a brief study about the power

amplifiers, their different classes and the PSPICE simulation models of all of them

has been carried out. Class B power amplifier is then experimentally implemented

to drive a speaker.

CHAPTER NO.1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 MOTIVATION

A sound system is the one that makes live or pre-recorded sounds louder and may also

distribute those sounds to a larger or more distant audience. In some situations, a sound

system is also used to enhance the sound of the sources on the stage, not only simply

amplifying the sources unaltered but integrating them together. A sound system may be

very complex, including hundreds of microphones, complex audio mixing and signal

processing systems, tens of thousands of watts of amplification, and multiple loudspeaker

arrays. Also a sound system can be as simple as a small public address system in a

coffeehouse, consisting of a single microphone connected to a loudspeaker.

Here, in our project, we make an attempt to build one such PA system for domestic use.

1.2 APPLICATIONS

Important applications include public address systems, theatrical and concert sound

reinforcement, and domestic sound systems such as a stereo or home-theatre system,

Instrument amplifiers including guitar amplifiers.

1.3 BUILDING BLOCKS OF A SOUND SYSTEM

An Audio Amplification system is the combination of microphones, signal processors,

amplifiers, and loudspeakers that makes live or pre-recorded sounds louder and may also

transmit those sounds to a larger or more distant audience. The fundamental concepts

related to the project include transducers, their principle, their application in microphones,

power amplifiers, different classes of them and their characteristics etc.

9
More sophisticated sound systems are being developed nowadays which provide an

amplified, high quality sound with perfect control over volume and frequency.

Figure.1.1 Block diagram of an audio amplifier system.

The power supply is connected to the pre-amplifier and power amplifier blocks.

• Microphone - a transducer which converts sound into voltage.

• Pre-Amplifier – amplifies or increases the strength of the small audio signal (voltage)

coming from the microphone.

• Tone and Volume Controls – adjusts or allows us to set the nature of the audio signal.

The tone control takes care of the balance of high and low

frequencies. The volume control allows to adjust the strength of the signal.

• Power Amplifier - increases the strength (power) of the audio signal.

• Loudspeaker - a transducer which converts the audio signal to sound output.

CHAPTER NO. 2

AMPLIFIER
Introduction

1.1 Amplifier
An amplifier is an electronic device that increases the voltage, current, or power of a signal. Amplifiers
are used in wireless communications and broadcasting, and in audio equipment of all kinds. They can
be categorized as either weak-signal amplifiers or power amplifiers.
1.2 What is an Audio Power Amplifier?

An audio power amplifier (or power amp) is an electronic amplifier that amplifies low-power
electronic audio signals such as the signal from radio receiver or electric guitar pickup to a level that
is high enough for driving loudspeakers or headphones. Audio power amplifiers are found in all
manner of sound systems including sound reinforcement, public address and home audio systems and
musical instrument amplifiers like guitar amplifiers. It is the final electronic stage in a typical audio
playback chain before the signal is sent to the loudspeakers.

1.3 Characteristics of Audio Power Amplifier

The quality of an amplifier is measured by a series of specifications called figures of merit.
They are as follows:

 Bandwidth: The frequency ranges at which the amplifier can operate.

 Noise: The amount of unwanted extra information included in the output.

 Skew Rate: The maximum rate of change of output.

 Gain: Perhaps the most important, the ratio between the magnitudes of input and
output signals.

 Stability: The ability to provide constant and reliable output.

 Linearity: The degree of proportionality between input and output signals.

 Efficiency: Another very important characteristic, it is the ratio between the output
power and power consumed.

 Output Dynamic Range: Ratio between the largest and smallest useful output levels.

11
Advantages

 It has wide frequency response and large bandwidth.

 It is most convenient and least expensive amplifier.
 It provides high audio fidelity.
 It has low amplitude distortion.
 It provides low frequency distortion

Disadvantages

 It has a tendency to become noisy with age especially in moist climate.

 The voltage gain reduces at low as well as high frequencies.
 It provides poor impedance matching and hence it cannot be used as a final stage of an amplifier.

POWER SUPPLY
Introduction

Power Supply
A power supply unit (PSU) converts mains AC to low-voltage regulated DC power for the internal components of a computer.
They also provide a signal to the motherboard to indicate when the DC voltages are in spec, so that the computer is able to safely
power up and boot.

Functions
The desktop computer power supply converts the alternating current (AC) from a wall socket of mains electricity to a low-
voltage direct current (DC) to operate the motherboard, processor and peripheral devices. A power supply rail or voltage
rail refers to a single voltage provided by a power supply unit (PSU)

Working of Power Supply

Most power supplies will take power from AC mains and convert it into a usable DC for use in electronic devices.
During this process, a power supply is filling a number of roles, including: Transforming AC from a
mains supply into a steady DC. Preventing any AC from interfering with a DC supply output.

Advantages

 Greater efficiency because the switching transistor dissipates little power in the saturated state & the
off state compared to the semiconductor state.
 Small size & lighter weight (elimination of low frequency transformers) & low heat generation.

Disadvantages

• Greater complexity
• Generation of high amplitude, high frequency energy that a low pass filter blocks.

CONCLUSION
 Our final product is HIGH POWER AUDIO AMPLIFIER.
 Finally, it has its own GUI BASED CONTROL APPLICATION which can be operated through
Bluetooth enabled windows based devices.
 Control via Android based smart-phones using serial terminal emulator for android (Blue Term) We have
built BLUETOOTH INTERFACE between system & digital control.
