Office Migration Plan/ Checklist

Following IT matters shall be taken into consideration for office shifting/ migration.
1. Passive Networking/ Installation of Network Nodes
In the modern era, Computers can communicate with one another by the way of a local area
network (LAN), which is a computer network that covers a small area, usually a single
building or group of buildings. LANs have demonstrated a great increase in office
productivity. Therefore, Installation of network nodes is mandatory on all work stations in
new office for connectivity of Internet and Intranet applications. Installation work need to be
cater for at the time of office construction for concealed cabling.

Major Components of Passive Networking:

a. UTP Cable Rolls (Cat 6, 23AWG Solid Cable)
b. Patch Panels
c. Cable Managers
d. Faceplates
e. RJ-45 I/Os
f. Floor Cabinet
g. Branded Patch Cords 3m (for connectivity of workstations)
h. Branded Patch Cords 1m (For connectivity of patch panels and switches)
i. Optical Fiber Patch Cords (For uplinks)

Quantities of above mentioned items may be calculated based on number of work stations
and other offices. Normally, 60 to 70m UTP cable is used per node

2. Readiness of Server Room

Server room readiness will be ensured before the office migration based on the following
parameters
a. 1 x Room need to be marked as server room for installation of Core network and systems
equipment installation
b. Provision of power in server room. All server room equipment shall be connected on
UPS for power surge protection
c. Planning of backup power in racks and power source
d. Ensure maintaining minimum required cooling in the server room
e. Implementation of access control for server room
3. Active Networking Equipment

There are two (2) options for installation of active networking equipment in new office.

a. Procurement of New Equipment for New Office

If network infrastructure is aging, the office shifting is a good time to update the
networking equipment. If we plan it accordingly, we could even have our network up
and running in the new office before the shifting day arrives.

Note: The required equipment models, capacity, throughput, number of ports and other
parameters may be calculated based on the number of users and applications being used
by the employees.

b. Shifting of Existing Equipment to the New Office

The other obvious option is the shifting of existing/ current networking and systems
equipment. Precautions to be taken before the migration of IT equipment.

1) Make several backup copies of all equipment including firewalls and servers.
2) Store backup copies where they will not be affected by the move.
3) Ensure full recovery is possible in case if something goes wrong.

4. Migration of Internet Services

a. Discussion/ execution with ISP for migration of Internet links and services
b. Migration of same pool of public IPs on new Internet link due to various reasons
1) Internet facing services being published on these IPs
2) IPs are whitelisted for voice/ sip from PTA
3) Binding of any other services of the organization

5. Migration of Communication Requirements

a. Discussion/ execution with the service provider for shifting of telephone lines/ IP phones
and PBX/ exchange
