WHAT IS GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT (GAD)

— is a development perspective that recognizes the unequal status and situation of women and men in society.

— Women and men have different development needs and interests, which is institutionalized and perpetuated by cultural, social, economic and
political norms, systems and structures.

GOAL OF GAD

— As a development approach, GAD seeks to equalize the status and condition of and relations between women and men by influencing the
process and output of policy-making, planning, budgeting, implementation and monitoring, and evaluation so that they would deliberately address the
gender issues and concerns affecting the full development of women.

GENDER EQUITY

— Means giving more opportunities to those who have less and those who are historically and socially disadvantaged based on their needs for them
to operate on a level playing field. “Focusing on the needs of women does not mean discriminating against men or putting them at a disadvantage”
What is gender socialization
Even if you are not familiar with the concept of “gender socialization”, it is most likely that you have been
influenced by it and in turn passed on your own beliefs about what constitutes gender-appropriate attitudes and
behaviour to others. Gender socialization begins at birth, intensifies during adolescence and contributes to
gender inequalities in education, employment, income, empowerment, and other significant outcomes of well-
being during adolescence and later in life

Gender socialization is the process by which individuals are taught how to socially behave in accordance
with their assigned gender, which is assigned at birth based on their sex phenotype. ... Children and adults who
do not conform to gender stereotypes are often ostracized by peers for being different.
Gender socialization is the process by which individuals are informed about the norms and behaviors
associated with their assigned sex, usually during childhood development.
The four primary agents of gender socialization are parents, teachers, peers, and the media.
