TOPIC: MODAL VERBS TO EXPRESS DEGREES OF CERTAINTY. (Certeza)

MODAL VERBS TO EXPRESS

DEGREES OF CERTAINTY.

✓ We use these modal verbs

with present simple tense
when we want to make a guess
about something. We choose
the verb depending on how sure
we are.

How certain are you? Use these modal verbs:

80-100% – Completely or almost certain must,

50% – Expecting to be certain May

30% – Maybe certain might, could

Example:
I am waiting for Julie with another friend, David.
I ask: 'Where is Julie?'
David guesses:

• She must be on the bus. (I'm fairly sure.)

• She may be in the wrong room. (I think it is possible.)
• She could be lost. (It is a weak possibility/perhaps)
• She might come soon. (It is a weak possibility/perhaps)
• She can't be at home. (I'm fairly sure this isn't true)
