SW-CM NO.2 (20%): EVAPORATIVE COOLING, MIXING AIR STREAMS and COOLING TOWER
TIME LIMIT: 6 days TOTAL SCORE:
STUDENT’S NAME/COURSE/YR: GABISAN, MARY JUDY A. BSNAME-5 ID NO. 17667536
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DIRECTION: In the multiple choice, encircle the answer of your choice. For the analysis, show your complete solutions.

I. Identification/Multiple Choice: (COMPREHENSION and SYNTHESIS)

EVAPORATIVE COOLING: (10 points)
1. What is evaporative cooling? Will it work in humid climates?
- Evaporative cooling is based on the principle: as water evaporated the latent heat of vaporization is absorbed from the water
body and the surrounding air. As a result, both water and air are cooled during process.
- Evaporative coolers are used to avoid high cost of cooling in hot and dry climates. It will not work in humid climates.
2. Which of the following statements are TRUE?
a) When the enthalpy of air is equal to the enthalpy of saturated air at the wetted surface temperature, then there is no sensible heat
transfer between air and the wetted surface
b) When the enthalpy of air is equal to the enthalpy of saturated air at the wetted surface temperature, then there is no latent heat
transfer between air and the wetted surface
c) When the enthalpy of air is equal to the enthalpy of saturated air at the wetted surface temperature, then there is no net heat
transfer between air and the wetted surface
d) When the enthalpy of air is equal to the enthalpy of saturated air at the wetted surface temperature, then the wet bulb
temperature of air remains constant

MIXING OF AIRSTREAMS: (10 points)

3. Two unsaturated airstreams are mixed adiabatically. It is observed that some moisture condenses during the mixing process. Under what conditions will
this be the case?
- When two air streams at two different states (state 1 and state 2) are located close to the saturation curve, the straight line
connecting the two states will cross the saturation curve, and state of the mixture (state 3) may lie to the left of the saturation
curve. In this case, some water will condense during the mixing process.

II. Identification/Multiple Choice: (APPLICATION and ANALYSIS)

EVAPORATIVE COOLING: (15 points)
1. In an AC unit, 3.5 m3/s of air at 27 ̊C dry-bulb temperature and 50% RH enters the unit. The leaving condition of the air is 13 ̊C dry-
bulb temperature and 90% RH. Using the properties from the Psychrometric Chart, calculate the Refrigerating Capacity in kW.
a) 87.57 kW b) 77.57 kW c) 57.87 kW d) 58.77 kW

III. MIXING OF AIRSTREAMS: (15 points)

2. The mass of an outside air at 50°C in an air conditioning unit is 60 kg. Find the temperature after mixing if the outside air mixed with
40 kg with recirculated air at 35°C.
a) 44 °C b) 39 °C c) 52 °C d) 47 °C

IV. COOLING TOWER: (50 points)

3. Determine the approximate load on a cooling tower if the entering and leaving temperatures are 96°F and 88°F, respectively and the
flow rate of the water over the tower is 30 gpm.
a) 2500 Btu/min b) 2000 Btu/min c) 3000 Btu/min d) 3500 Btu/min

4. The evaporative condenser of an ammonia refrigeration plant has a water flow rate 226 kg/s and enters a natural draft cooling tower
at 40°C. The water is cooled to 29 °C by air entering at 38°C db and 24°C wb. The air leaves the tower as saturated at 40°C db.
Calculate the make-up water required in kg/hr.
a) 8977 b) 8055 c) 8055 d) 8388

5. Water at 55 ̊C is cooled in a cooling water which has an efficiency of 65%. The temperature of the surrounding air is 32 ̊C dry bulb and
70% relative humidity. The heat dissipated from the condenser is 2,300,000 kJ/hr. Find the capacity in liters per second of the pump
used in the cooling tower.
a) 8.66 L/s b) 6.80 L/s c) 7.60 L/s d) 6.70 L/s
