ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS
ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE
Environmental Compliance means conforming to environmental laws, regulations,
standards and other requirements such as site permits to operate. In recent
years, environmental concerns have led to a significant increase in the number and scope of
compliance imperatives across all global regulatory environments. Being closely related,
environmental concerns and compliance activities are increasingly being integrated and
aligned to some extent in order to avoid conflicts, wasteful overlaps and gaps.
In order to comply with the above requirements and obligations, certain conditions within
them must be met. Typically, these will include:
The ISO 14000 family of standards provides practical tools for companies and
organizations of all kinds looking to manage their environmental responsibilities. ISO
14000 is a family of standards related to environmental management that exists to help
organizations (a) minimize how their operations (processes, etc.) negatively affect the
environment (i.e., cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); (b) comply with applicable
laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements, and (c) continually
improve in the above.
The ISO 14000 family includes most notably the ISO 14001 standard, which
represents the core set of standards used by organizations for designing and implementing
an effective Environmental Management System (EMS). Other standards included in this
series are ISO 14004, which gives additional guidelines for a good EMS, and more
specialized standards dealing with specific aspects of environmental management. The
major objective of the ISO 14000 series of norms is "to promote more effective and
efficient environmental management in organizations and to provide useful and usable
tools--ones that are cost-effective, system-based, [and] flexible, and reflect the best
organizations and the best organizational practices available for gathering, interpreting, and
communicating environmentally relevant information". ISO 14001:2015 and its supporting
standards such as ISO 14006:2011 focus on environmental systems to achieve this. The
other standards in the family focus on specific approaches such as audits, communications,
labelling and life cycle analysis, as well as environmental challenges such as climate
change.
