PRE-REQUISITE
1. Assemble all materials needed
-10cc syringe, wash cloth/towel, sterile gloves, soap and water
2. Identify the patient based on hospital’s protocol, then explain
procedure.
3. Provide Privacy
4. Wash hands
5. Place underpad beneath patient, then position comfortably
-Dorsal recumbent for female
-Supine position for male
6. Drape patient and assist on removing under garments
7. Don sterile gloves
8. Consider attaching the catheter to the drainage bag, if urine
specimen collection is not needed.
9. Attach the sterile water-filled syringe on the inflation port
-It is necessary to pre-test the catheter balloon
10. Prepare patient by using antiseptic swabs on the ff manner:
a. Female - With a downward stroke, cleanse the right labia
minora then discard. Repeat for the left labia minora. Then on
the area between the right and left labia minora.
b. Male – Cleanse the penis on a circular motion starting at the
urethral meatus and work outward.
11. Lubricate the end part of catheter
12. Proceed with the catheterization until urine is visible in the
drainage tube
a. Female – Advance catheter 2 more inches (or depending on
the protocol)
b. Male – Advance catheter 6-10 inches more
13. Inflate the balloon using entire 10ml sterile water provided in the
prefilled syringe
14. Gently pull the catheter until slight tension is detected indicating
that the balloon is in place
15. Secure the catheter by putting a tape on the upper part of thigh.
Hang the urine bag on the foot of the bed, making sure it will not
be affected/ get kinked by the side rails

16. Discard all used materials, remove gloves, then wash hands.
17. Document the time and date of catheter insertion, as well as the
level, color and consistency of the urine output.
