ANG ASEAN AT ANG PILIPINAS

Unlike the USA that has a hold on both the Philippine political and economic sphere, ASEAN is

a regional organization that holds no power over its members. The USA once colonized the

Philippines and influenced its growth through non-aggressive and manipulative ways such as

altering the education system and creating a puppet government made of Filipinos that they have

influence over. In comparison, ASEAN is an organization fighting for the decolonization of its

member-countries. However, it’s non-interference rule doesn’t allow much action. The South

China Sea dispute is a popular regional issue that involves a founding member and a trading

partner. However, despite the majority of member-countries stating that the South China Sea

isn’t part of China’s jurisdiction, ASEAN held no sway other than discussing their opinions.

2. Ano ang pagkakaunawa mo ng ideya na “ASEAN way”?

The ASEAN way is described as informal, non-confrontational, and cooperative. At the least, it

provides a medium of discussion. ASEAN promotes economic growth and decolonization, with

an emphasis on non-interference to prevent regional conflict. However, its apathetic stand on

international issues is problematic as it provides no support to its member-countries.

3. Ano ang kaugnayan ng motto ng organisasyon na “one vision, one identity, one community”

sa usaping rehiyonalisasyon sa Asya?

ASEAN was founded by Southeast Asian countries after succeeding their independency. As

such, its motto of “one vision, one identity, one community” stands for their unity as a region

working together towards a better future. Although Asia is divided and its culture, history,

religion and such are diverse, ASEAN is an organization that thrives under cooperation. “One

vision” represents their objective of a better future, “one identity” represents Asia as a whole,

and “one community” represents their willingness to work together.
