COVID-19: ONE YEAR AFTER THE FIRST

CONFIRMED CASE IN PERU


On March 6, 2020 President Martín Vizcarra confirmed the first case of coronavirus in
our country.

L ast March 6, marked one year since the first positive case of COVID-19 was confirmed in
Peru, the announcement was made by President of the Republic, Martín Vizcarra.
"In recent days and weeks this virus has not only spread to Europe and many parts of the
world, but also to neighboring countries such as Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina and Chile, and the
risk to reach Peru was always latent," he said in a pronouncement.

The first case of Coronavirus in Peru was a 25-year-old young man who had returned to Peru
after being in Europe, a continent where the virus was already spreading quickly. He was an
employee of the Latam airline, who was on vacation in Europe when he got the infection and
made all his flights, including the return one with other airlines.

As soon as the fisrt case of coronavirus en Peru was known, the protocols were activated at
airports, as well as in places with the greatest influx of tourists, maritime and land terminals.
Since then, the number of cases began to increase and forced the government to establish a
nationwide state of emergency just a few days later. The quarantine lasted for several months
and was modified to allow new economic activities to be carried out.

During the first two months of the pandemic, the number of deaths from this disease was less
than 100 per day, but in May 2020 the numbers began to increase dramatically. In addition of
that, there were important changes in the authorities that handled the crisis.
Up to now the pandemic has impacted all aspects of our country social life, both in the health
and in the economy.
