POTENTIOMETRIC ESTIMATION OF FERROUS AMMONIUM

SULPHATE USING STANDARD POTASSIUM DICHROMATE

SOLUTION
Aim: To estimate the amount of given FAS by titrating against standard
potassium dichromate solution potentiometrically
Principle: When the pair of electrodes are placed in the sample acidified
FAS solution, it shows the potential difference between two electrodes.
This potential difference is measured against the addition of the titrant.

Indicator electrode: Platinum

Reference Electrode-Calomel electrode
Indicator Electrode: The electrode whose potential is dependent on the
concentration of the ions to be investigated is known as indicator
electrode.
Example: Pt electrode

Reference electrode: Electrode whose potential is accurately known

and it is not changes with time.
Example: SHE, Calomel electrode, Ag|AgCl electrode

Procedure:
Burette: Standard Pottasium dichromate solution
Beaker: 25 mL of FAS solution + 10 mL H2SO4 solution
Equivalence point: Abrupt increases in the potential
