6 Style Questions Page 1 of 1

A Writing Exercise for the Extra Curious

For those who want to do a little extra, I challenge you to answer these 6 questions that will get you thinking
more deeply about your style and what you hope to achieve. These questions are for you. The more you
engage with these questions, the more you will get out of them.

You can write your answers in your sketchbook to share or keep to yourself; you can also type them directly
in your class Project Page. Of course, you can also print out this page and write your answers under the
questions!

1. The three overarching pain points of style are Consistency, Confidence and Originality. Which of these do
you feel like you relate to the most? How so?

2. The two kinds of illustrators are The Artist and The Designer. The Artist sees an opportunity in every project
to express their own identity, whereas the Designer sees an opportunity to solve each problem in a unique
way. Which of these do you most relate to? In which way?

3. The two kinds of illustration problems are Representational (direct representation) and Conceptual
(figurative or indirect representation). Do you feel like you are better at one kind of illustration more than the
other? Why or why not?

4. How do you feel about your illustration style or set of styles right now? What do you like about it and what do
you feel is lacking? Why?

5. As artists, we all have some kind of ultimate project, some kind of dream job. Maybe when we’re starting out
we’d be happy to take on any project. But if you can name one dream project or one dream one client, what
would that be? What role do you think style plays in your chances of getting such a job?

6. What is one project you have worked on or illustration you have made that you are most proud of, which you
would like to do more of? Why? How can you start doing more work like that?
