For the “Language Competence” section of my capstone portfolio, I chose to include

several artifacts from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
Spanish assessment tests. I chose these artifacts because they reflect my abilities with the
Spanish language, and they certify me as an advanced speaker of the language. These artifacts
definitely demonstrate the criteria for this section of my Spanish portfolio.

According to the portfolio requirements, my artifact on speaking competence had to


demonstrate my level of speaking proficiency according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
The only possible artifact was a scan of the official certificate showing my rating on the Oral
Proficiency Interview from the Spanish 491 class. I received an Advanced-Mid rating on this
test.

For the next portfolio requirement, my artifact on listening competence had to


demonstrate my level of listening proficiency according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
The only possible artifact was a scan of my self-assessment of interpretive listening skills using
the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements. I gave myself an Advanced-High rating, according to
the statement criteria. I also checked a few boxes under the Superior and Distinguished ratings,
but not enough to confidently rate myself that high.

According to the next portfolio requirement, my artifact on reading competence had to


demonstrate my level of reading proficiency according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
One of the possible artifacts was a score from the ART reading comprehension test. I received an
Advanced-High score on this test, as demonstrated by the certificate I uploaded.

Finally, the last section of this part of the portfolio required an artifact demonstrating my
level of writing proficiency according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. I uploaded a scan
of my self-assessment of presentational writing skills using the ACTFL Can-Do Statements. I
gave myself an Advanced-High rating, according to the statement criteria. I also checked a few
boxes under the Superior and Distinguished ratings, but not enough to confidently rate myself
that high. On July 29th, 2021, I took the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) as part of the Spanish
491 class. Unfortunately, my rating on that test won’t be available until after my graduating term,
so it will not be uploaded to my portfolio at this time.

I have developed many skills in Spanish language competence as a Spanish major at


Brigham Young University. The most important skills I gained came from taking my grammar
classes seriously. In fact, Spanish 421 (the fourth-year grammar class) was one of my favorite
and most insightful classes at BYU. The class helped me to iron out several wrinkles in my
knowledge of the Spanish language. I definitely plan to continue using and developing this
competence in the future. After I graduate from BYU, I will continue my education by attending
the Mortuary Science program at Salt Lake Community College. I look forward to using my
advanced Spanish language competence to communicate with the large Hispanic population in
the Utah Valley. Additionally, I will continue to reach out to the Spanish-speaking friends I
made while serving a Church mission here in the United States.
