The following animations show how to construct a
square using a compass and straightedge.

We could associate an algebra to our geometry using a

Cartesian coordinate system made of two lines, and
represent points of our plane by vectors.

If one agrees that set theory is an appealing foundation

of mathematics, then all mathematical objects must be
defined as sets of some sort.

Another consequence of the completeness theorem is

that it justifies the conception of infinitesimals as actual

In logic, an argument requires a set of (at least) two
declarative sentences (or "propositions") known as the
"premises" (or "premisses"), along with another

Philosophical debates surrounding propositions as they

relate to propositional attitudes have also recently

Externalists say that if we assume competent speakers

know what they think, and say what they think, the
difference in what these two speakers mean corresponds
to a difference in the thoughts of the two speakers that
is not (necessarily) reflected by a difference in the
internal make up of the speakers or thinkers. They urge
us to move from externalism about meaning of the sort
Putnam defended to externalism about contentful states
of mind. The example pertains to singular terms, but has
been extended to cover kind terms as well such as
natural kinds (e.g., 'water') and for kinds of artifacts
(e.g., 'espresso maker').
In 1969, Willard Van Orman Quine brought the term
"natural kind" into contemporary analytic philosophy with
an essay bearing that title.:1 His opening paragraph laid
out his approach in three parts.

Quine received his B.A. summa cum laude in

mathematics from Oberlin College in 1930, and his Ph.D.

In Germany, university-level education usually happens

in either a Universität (plural: Universitäten) or a
Fachhochschule (plural: Fachhochschulen); both can be
referred to as a Hochschule, which is the generic term in
Germany for all institutions awarding academic degrees.

There are a few universities, such as Catholic University

of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and Bundeswehr University
Munich, which run Fachhochschule courses in addition to
their normal courses.
