Answer the following two questions. Assume reasonable value for any missing data.

(Q.1) From the approximate equivalent circuit of an induction motor, show that

R2
STD,max  and
R1  ( X 1  X 2 ) 2
2

21.12V 2
TD ,max 
2ns [ R1  ( X 1  X 2 ) 2  R1 ]

(Q.2) A three-phase, 50 hp, 460 V, 60 Hz, four pole induction motor operating at rated load,
rated voltage and rated frequency has an operating speed of 1760 rpm. The line voltage
suddenly drops to 90% of the rated voltage. Determine – (i) the amount of torque that must be
removed from the motor shaft to maintain a speed of 1760 rpm, (ii) The expected minimum
starting torque at 90% of the rated voltage. Given that the expected minimum locked rotor
torque at rated voltage and frequency is 140% of the rated torque.
