The food pyramid for so many years was something we needed to follow and teach;

this was the prime example of what daily intake should be. Until recently, MyPlate, has come

out and redefined what mealtime should be ,what it should consist of, what defines mealtime,

what are we supposed to consume to be healthy, to treat diseases such as diabetes, etc. There

are many different associations that believe so many different things on what should be placed

in this so-called triangle of nutrition. “The American Diabetes Association (ADA) believes

m
that there is no single dietary distribution of calories among carbohydrate, protein, and fat for

er as
people with diabetes and that macronutrient distribution should be individualized” (ADA,

co
eH w
2017). This is very important when we are talking about diabetics especially. However,

MyPlate is impressive, it gives you a focus on a variety of different things, with a variety in
ou urc
amount and nutrition to consume. MyPlate states, “Eating health is a journey shaped by many

factors, including our stage of life, situations, preferences, access to food, culture, traditions,
o
aC s

and the personal decision we make over time” (MyPlate, 2020). If small changes can be made
vi y re

such as focus on whole fruits, moving to low fat or fat free dairy, switch to whole grains, and

whole fruits and make changes in veggies, these are little steps to maintaining or reaching a
ed d

healthier lifestyle.

I really believe that this platform is something that we can use to educate and teach

patients and our communities on the importance of becoming healthier now and for the years
is

to come. If you can only change one thing now, after a few weeks, that will be
Th

like second nature, then you will be able to change something else. I think this platform is

beneficial in our population, I think our population is currently obese and we have got to do
sh

something about it, because chronic illness is on the rise, due to bad dietary habits.
