INTRODUCTION
University of the Assumption 4
Health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease and infirmity, defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) in
its broader sense. One of the components of health is physical health that is the
overall physical condition of a living organism at a given time (Kurtus, 2017).
Moreover, motives in psychology is a state of physiological and psychological, which
influences how people behave.
Nowadays, people are being obsessed about one’s body figure. It is always
important for the people to have an aesthetic body, because of this present time,
the society molds the peoples mind into having a perfect or dreamed body just like
what they saw on magazines. According to the Mind your Body: Body conscious
(2015), Body disappointment is not interface with wellbeing. It is interface with
numerous negative things, such as dietary problems, undesirable exercise
propensities, low confidence, and sorrow. The disguise of the thin-athletic body
perfect is especially troubling on the grounds that you have individuals attempting to
wind up thin through absence of sustenance and afterward practicing while not
appropriately sustained. It is perilous.
University of the Assumption 5
Many contributors can affect people’s health that can make a person fall on
the downside or either on the advantage part. In children and youth nowadays it can
create a lot of effect. It tackles the difference on optimum development because in
keeping the equilibrium of human life, a lot of procedures are being done. It is full of
choices, decisions and problems. People on varying ages must wade in their way and
be involved to primary issues in a community. One problem that is fast and widely
spreading in the community is the lack of knowledge and care in people’s body and
health completely. According to Physical movement can enhance psychological
wellness by diminishing and forestalling conditions, for example, uneasiness and
wretchedness, and additionally enhancing mind-set and different parts of prosperity.
Teenagers, who always spend time on social media, pretty much see media
messages, advising people to change one’s appearance. These various influences
can be seen in magazines, on the internet, on televisions and in movies. Most are
advertisements designed to entire people to get something, like clothes, make up or
a weight loss product. Being thin is one of the strongest messages people get.
Images and words in social media tell that being beautiful means being thin. But in
real life, people who are happy and successful come in all shapes and sizes, Along
with the pressure to be thin, people see or hear about different ways to lose weight.
Eating less or eating differently is the common misinterpretation that people get
when trying to lose weight or getting into diet. Teens who diet are often more
concerned with how they look rather than their health. In addition, this can lead to
weight-loss goals that are not healthy, the numerous foundation (2018) the
accompanying point will enable you to see more about eating less, for example, five
approaches to achieve a sound weight, how might I get thinner securely, and dietary
problems
asses the prosperity of people. (Cho et al, 2011). Reason for people to achieve a
desired weight or body appearance. Without considering the other categories of
health, many would not realize that it is not the physical health that individual are
concerned about but because of psychological well-being. Many people would think
that it is just the same since physical health and psychological health almost have
the same motives, for the body. However, according to Cho et al. Mental prosperity
has been analyzed as a pointer of fruitful adjustment amid old and extremely
maturity. (Cho et al., 2011). However, it is said that these are two dimensions of
psychological well-being as Cho et al. mentioned, The two-kinds of impact may have
distinctive versatile capacities. Negative impact alludes to a result of maladaptive
conduct, though positive influence might be considered fortification for versatile or
proper conduct. (Cho et al., 2011)
OBJECTIVES
The main goal of the study is to gather information about being a figure
conscious in terms of psychological and physical aspect. Thus, this study aims: a.)
To differentiate psychological and physical motives for being figure conscious. b.) To
know the stand of the Senior High School students and teachers about this study c.)
To determine the factors that affect their stand or decision for being figure conscious
in terms of psychological and physical motives.
University of the Assumption 7
Nowadays, people are all much aware that dieting has already took
over their modern world. But what is their purpose in doing so? Is it because they
are concern of their welfare or other people’s perspective about them? Yes, every
individual has his or her own set of decisions and it is for him or her to know or find
out which category do they belong: psychological or physical motives in being figure
conscious. The lack of discernment in people’s mind about grasping the matter of
misconception on being healthy and fit is one common conflict in a society that is
needed to be overcome. There are also various circumstances that influence a
person’s well-being such as peer pressure, social discrimination and even personal
satisfaction.
1. What are the perceptions of every student and teacher in Senior High School
about being figure conscious in terms of psychological and physical motives?
2. What stand do they support and what is or are their reason/s upon their
decision?
3. What are the factor/s such as people, experience, personal perspective, and
etc. behind their stand?
This research is important because it aimed to identify the people who are
figure conscious and which category do they belong: physical or psychological
motives. Moreover, assess the reason/s and factor/s that made them conclude that
kind of reasoning and stand. By this study, people will be more enlightened about
this topic and misconceptions that are present can be given clarifications. For this
research to be accomplished, the researchers interviewed the following: fellow
students and teachers in Senior high school.
University of the Assumption 8
Teachers: For them to be knowledgeable enough so they can teach and advise their
fellow students as well, and for them to behold presentable aspects in dealing with
their students.
Students or Millennials: For them to know the difference between doing something
out of obligation and out of motivation. And for the millennials to take their health
more seriously.
Adults: For them to be aware of the consequences of risking one’s health and taking
it for granted. And for them to be able to take care of their body and health in a
cautious way.
Everyone in General: Because ever since a person was born, he or she is influenced
with many factors, which results into personal consciousness within oneself. And
this research is beneficial to everyone, for they will identify the various reasons and
factors affecting one’s consciousness which would help them to make some
improvements in their own respective body and health.
This research did not include diseases (Anorexia and Obesity) and eating
disorders that may be related with the study for it is beyond the researchers’ control
and might cause further complications in the research.
On the other hand, this research strictly limits its coverage on Senior High
School students and teachers in the university only. However, gender preference
University of the Assumption 9
and personal beliefs were not given importance in this study and were not
considered by the researchers.
METHOD
This part of the study discussed various procedures and strategies such as
method of research, purpose of the research, data collection, participants of the
study and conduction of interview that were used by the researchers for further
enhancement of the study. The summary of findings, conclusion and
recommendation were tackled as well.
In this study, the researchers proposed the usage of pure research which
determined someone’s knowledge about the topic presented. Descriptive research
was used because this research sought to know the insights or point of view of a
society about psychological and physical motives for being figure conscious.
Additionally, researchers used qualitative data as consultant(s) were required to do
so.
Twenty people among Senior High School students and teachers around the
campus were chosen as respondents for the study, and those who were only
interested and willing enough to cooperate in the progress of this study were
entertained by the researchers.
After the needed data are gathered, the researchers classified each
respondent’s answer into two selections namely psychological and physical motives
for being figure conscious to know which category most people belong, and the
factors behind their decision. After that, the researchers transcribed each
respondents’ answer to the corresponding questions given to them. The researchers
conducted this study for the benefit of everyone, especially millennials (students)
and adults (teachers) in their community.

DISCUSSION
Health is something people tend to care about which also technically includes
body figure. And as stated by Erikson, every person has awareness or consciousness
University of the Assumption 18
of his or her self or society. And figure consciousness is one serious issue people
are currently dealing with in the present. Being a figure conscious can be influenced
by many factors and there are many reason/s behind every individuals' decision to
be one. Figure consciousness may be under physical or psychological motives, which
simply means, a person being a figure conscious might has the reason of, to satisfy
oneself or one's willingness to be healthy or might be because of certain factors such
as the society, peers, artists, media, unfortunate experiences and etc.
As the researchers go through beyond this study findings and resources were
found to answer and prove the presented topic. sixteen out of twenty respondents
supported the stand physical motives and the other three stand for psychological
motives and only one of the participants stand both psychological and physical
motives. On the other hand, the chosen thirteen respondents categorized
themselves under physical motives, four of them under psychological and the other
three both physical and psychological. Certain factors also affected their decision,
Ten of them said bullying is one factor, four of them were discriminated, eight
answered peer pressure, thirteen of the participants think it is personal satisfaction
and only one chose others: personal reasons. These factors proved that every
individual’s decision and identity can be influenced by such things.
Everyone has their own knowledge about thing, and as for table 1
respondents define the term physical motive as doing changes for own sake, and
psychological motives as being affected by what other people say. As per Smith, S.
(2017) Psychological variables can impact well-being either by implication, by
changing practices that influence your well-being, for example, eating, dozing and
mingling , or specifically, by delivering changes in your hormones and additionally
heart rate.
People have their own decision on which stand they will support. Table 2, 2.1
and 2.2 illustrates that most of the respondents have chosen physical motives as
University of the Assumption 19
their stand, while the other participants have chosen psychological motives and only
one have chosen both and the same goes with the findings of their chosen category
but three of the respondents chose both. According to Dixit, S. (2011) The endless
arrangement of physical and mental adjustment of young people affects the social
and behavioral parts of their lives. The institutionalized model of magnificence in our
public that inclines towards the underscores simply specific physical angles, for
example, slimness and slenderness influence youths’ convictions of physical
development. The absence of association between the genuine and the perfect view
of their own (body dissatisfaction) and their firm readiness to adjust their body in
order to institutionalize them to the social idea of slimness (drive for slenderness)
are a portion of the primary reasons in charge of the decided and consistent youths’
drive to take after such perfect guidelines.
On the other hand, table 3, 3.1 and 3.2 shows the factors that influenced the
chosen respondents’ decision and reason behind being a figure conscious. Under
physical and psychological motives are personal satisfaction, having the greatest
number of response, bullying, peer pressure, discrimination and other personal
reasons are identified as well. As indicated by E. Vargas (2014), often we are
advised to change our appearance. Magazines continually offer tips about how to get
more fit and conceal our flaws, without really knowing anything about us. Sitcoms
much of the time utilize overweight characters' bodies as the premise of the show's
jokes. Messages from the media and from each other frequently suggest that we
should need to change, that we should think about looking slimmer.
CONCLUSSION/RECOMMENDATION
University of the Assumption 20
Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn:
1. The researchers have concluded that everyone was conscious of what and how
they look as stated by the theory of Erik Erikson.
2. The researchers recommend to the people who are figure conscious, that it is
adequate to be regardful of the body but not to the point that people are neglecting
one’s well-being and condition.
3. The researchers recommend that figure conscious under physical motive is fine as
long as people are staying with the aim of being healthy and would not extent to
being over conscious.

TRANSCRIPTIONS
Interviewer: First question po Miss, what is your prior knowledge and understanding
about being a figure conscious person specifically, in terms of psychological and
physical motives?
Participant 1: My prior knowledge about being a figure conscious is the way you
accept yourself or there’s a standard you have to follow, the standard that is being
set by the society.
Interviewer: Second po, between psychological and physical motives for being figure
conscious state what stand do you support po.
Interviewer: So, of the two choices po, which category do you think you belong?
Participant 1: Okay, physical because I want to improve myself, my body, right? So,
I want to be a healthy person that’s why I want to have a proportional body. But in
psychological, sometimes I have--- there’s an artist , then I idolized her and I want
that body, then her body becomes my standard.
Interviewer: Last question po, name the factors that influence your decision or
stand. For some instances, have you been bullied, experienced discrimination, peer
pressures, personal satisfaction and others po miss?
Participant 1: I think it’s peer pressures, if all or almost of your friends are having
that kind of figure
Interviewer: So, how did it affect you and your decision po miss?
Interviewer: First question, what are your prior knowledge and understanding about
being a figure conscious person specifically, in terms of psychological and physical
motives?
Interviewer: So, of the two choices, which category do you think you belong?
Participant 2: Because I really love myself and I change for me to be better, because
I believe that you don’t need to change or improve yourself just to be accepted by
others, you should love yourself in order for you to----for others to love you, you
need to be true to yourself
Interviewer: Last question, name the factors that influence your decision or stand.
For some instances, have you been bullied, experienced discrimination, peer
pressures, personal satisfaction and others?
Participant 2:It’s good because I know what are the things that could make me
better and I will not stop improving myself not just physically but also mentally and
spiritually.
Interviewer: Hi! We have some questions for you. First question, what are your prior
knowledge and understanding about being a figure conscious person specifically, in
terms of psychological and physical motives?
Participant 3: I think it’s the physical motives, because I am a sporty person and I

really in shape and it could really boost your confidence.
Interviewer: First questionpo, what are your prior knowledge and understanding
about being a figure conscious person specifically, in terms of psychological and
physical motives?
Participant 4: So, based on my own perspective, when we say you’re being a figure
conscious person in terms of psychological motives, when you’re getting affected to
the comments of others, to the society that you’re in, for example there’s this
specific person, he or she will say that---in Filipino term okay na “Uy,
tumatabaka!”, “Nananabatayo ah!” like that, you get affected so much. And then
University of the Assumption 28
physical motives now, it’s like---it’s on your own will that you care for your body, you
care for your health so much that’s why you ,you are being figure conscious person
Interviewer: Next questionpo, between psychological and physical motives for being
figure conscious state what stand do you support
Participant 4: The stand that I support is physical motive. Why? Because we all
know that health is wealth, health comes first. So, you don’t bother the comments of
others, as long as you should always think about yourself, which one is good for you
and which one is bad for you.
Interviewer: But, with the two choicespo miss, which category do you think you
belong?
Interviewer: Third questionpo, name the factors that influence your decision or
stand. For some instances, have you been bullied, experienced discrimination, peer
pressures, personal satisfaction or otherspo miss?
Interviewer: So, with those factors po miss, how did it affect you and your decisions
po?
to get satisfied, if I really care so much for my health then I should be figure
conscious such as I practice balanced diets, that’s all.
Interviewer: First question, what are your prior knowledge and understanding about
being figure conscious person specifically in terms of psychological and physical
motives?
Interviewer: Of the two choices which category do you think you belong?
Participant 5: Because I care more about what other people, I care more about
others people opinion.
Interviewer: Number 3, name the factors that influenced your decision and stand.
For some instances, have you been bullied, experience discrimination, peer
pressures, personal satisfaction and others?
Interviewer: First question, what are your prior knowledge and understanding about
being figure conscious person specifically in terms of psychological and physical
motives pomiss?
University of the Assumption 30
Participant 6: Figure conscious person, the first one individual who maintains or
regulate a balance diet for a healthy body. For psychological, the reason is why they
are being a figure conscious person is to avoid being called fat or being bullied,
avoid teasing also while for the physical, for health reasons like to avoid health
problems, to do exercise, to be physically fit.
Interviewer: Number 2po, between psychological and physical motives for being
figure conscious, state what stand do you support po miss.
Interviewer: Of the two choices po which category do you think do you belong? And
what made you say po miss?
Participant 6:Again it's the physical because I am not that concern of the other
peoples opinion of my body, what matters is what I feel. It's all about myself so why
do I care with others people opinion. If I know that I am healthy enough or
physically fit.
Interviewer: Last question po, name the factors that influenced your stand. For
some instances, have you been bullied, experience discrimination, peer pressures,
personal satisfaction and others po miss?
Participant 6:So I am not that bullied but I am called fat, I'm also invited by my
friends, so peer pressure to have a diet but I don't easily follow, I don't get easily
persuaded I only rely with my personal satisfaction. If I need to be conscious with
my figure, it happens but not as conscious as others. "
Interviewer: Ate, what are your prior knowledge and understanding about being a
figure conscious person specifically in terms of psychological and physical motives?
University of the Assumption 31
Participant 7: There are people who are figure conscious they… they... They’ve been
bullied before. There are also people who are figure conscious because they want to
satisfy themselves...They may think that they need to change their figure for their
health.
Participant 7: Ahh…physical.
Participant 7: Because for me you don’t need to change or improve your figure just
to please anyone.
Interviewer: What are your prior knowledge and understanding about being a figure
conscious person specifically, in terms of psychological and physical motives?
the society so you do things that will impress others. While physical motive is when
you want to be fit just for the benefit of yourself.
Interviewer: Of the two choices, which category do you think you belong?
Participant 8: Because I’m exercising and eating healthy foods because I wanted to
and just for the satisfaction of myself.
Interviewer: For some instances, have you been: Bullied, Experience discrimination,
Peer pressures, Personal satisfaction, If Others please specify.
Interviewer: What are your prior knowledge and understanding about being a figure
conscious person specifically, in terms of psychological and physical motives?
Participant 9: Okay so, my prior knowledge about being a figure conscious is that,
definitely when you want to be a figure conscious you want to become healthy and
specifically, in terms of psychological and physical motives. Okay so when we say
psychological it’s something like you are just after with what they say, and then,
University of the Assumption 33
when we say physical motives this are the things that we keep in mind because we
want to be healthy and then we want to be, yes we want to be healthy.
Interviewer: Between psychological and physical motive for being figure conscious
state what stand do you support. Of the two choices, which category do you think
you belong? And what made you say so?
Interviewer: Name the factors that influence your decision or stand, for some
instances, have you been: bullied, experience discrimination, peer pressures,
personal satisfaction, others, please specify
Participant 9: I think I’ll fall for personal satisfaction, because bullied, experience
discrimination and peer pressures they’re just under with psychological impact but
just like on what I have mentioned I will ago that I am more of physical motives
that’s why I’ll go for personal satisfaction because it will benefit me a lot, in terms of
my health condition
Interviewer: What are your prior knowledge and understanding about being a figure
conscious person specifically, in terms of psychological and physical motives?
Participant 10: For me, being figure conscious when it comes to psychological, you
are conscious or aware of what others will might say, being figure conscious
physically it means that you are conscious about your health.
University of the Assumption 34
Participant 10: Because as I’ve said, I am conscious of what others will might say
about me. I am also a physical conscious because I want to be physically
fit and there are times that I wear “unisex” clothes that’s why I maintain my body
fit.
Interviewer: Name the factors that influence your decision or stand, for some
instances, have you been: bullied, experience discrimination, peer pressures,
personal satisfaction, others, please specify.
Participant 10: Bullied and personal satisfaction.
Participant 10: I experience bullying when I was in grade school and because of that
I started to motivate myself to lose weight. Personal satisfaction because whenever
someone compliment me about my body, it really makes me happy.
Interviewer: First question, what are your prior knowledge and understanding about
being a figure conscious person specifically, in terms of psychological and physical
motives.
Participant 11: Psychological is how people think of you, while physical motives is
how you move that they see to you or your appearance
Interviewer: Between psychological and physical motive for being figure conscious
state what stand do you support?
University of the Assumption 35
Interviewer: So of the two choices, which category do you think you belong? And
what made you say so?
Participant 11: Hmm… Physical because I think people can easily and judge you on
how you look
Interviewer: No. 3 Name the factors that influence your decision or stand. For some
instances, have you been bullied, experienced discrimination peer pressures,
personal satisfaction or others?
Participant 11: I felt so down sometimes but I take it also as a way of joke and I
think this can be a reason for me to improve myself not for others but for me
Interviewer: So first question po, what are your prior knowledge and understanding
about being a figure conscious person specifically, in terms of psychological and
physical motives.
Participant 12: It is greatly being affected by the peer you belong and of course
