Standard Specification for and Structural Construction dal Preformed Expansion Joint Fillers for Concrete Pavinrg- — (Nonextruding and Resilient Bituminous Types) AASHTO DESIGNATION: M 213-95 (ASTM DESIGNATION: D 1751-83 (1991) 1. SCOPE 11 This. specification covers. pre- formed expansion joint fillers having rel atively ite extrusion and substantial e- covery after release from compression. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard [NOTE 1—Attenuion is called t AASHTO 1M 153 and to AASHTO M 33, 2. REFERENCED DOCUMENTS 21 AASHTO Standards: M 33. Specification for Pre- formed Expansion Joint Filler for Con. crete (Bituminous Type) Specification for Pre- formed Rubber and Cork Expansion Joint Fillers for Concrete Paving and Structural Constroction Test for Preformed Expansion Joint Fil- Jer for Concrete Construction M153 Ta 3, ORDERING INFORMATION 3.1 Products conforming to this specification are manufactured in sheet form to a range of thicknesses; namely 456 64, 9.5, 13, 19, and 25 mm. Sheet sizes ‘may be 900 or 1200 mm in width and standard length of 3 m, Purchaser must specify sheet sizes when ordering. 32. Joint filler in strip form is cut from the sheets as manufactured. When ordering joint filler strips, the purchaser ‘must specify thickness. width, and Jength; strip widths are available from ‘50 mm in increments of 13 mm. 4. MANUFACTURE 4.1. This product shall consist of pre- formed sheets or strips made of one of the following: 4.11 Cane or other suitable fibers of a cellular cellulosic nature securely bound together and then uniformly satu- rated with asphalt 4.1.2 Strips formed from clean gran- ulated cork securely bound together by 2 suitable asphalt binder and encased between two layers-of saturated felt or ‘wo layers of glass-fiber felt 4.13 Smps of durable composite of ground recycled rubber from automo- bile ures bonded together with a polyure- thane adhesive, 42 Preformed strips of ‘expansion Joint filler shall be of such character as not to be deformed or broken by twisting, bending, or other ordinary handling when exposed to atmospheric conditions. 5. REQUIREMENTS SL Test Specimen—The sample to be tested shall be cut from the sheet, as manufactured, and shall be represents. tive of the sheet stock 52 Compression—The load re- ‘quired to compress the test specimen to 50 percent of its thickness before test shall be not less than 690 kPa and not ‘more than 5200 kPa. If the nominal thickness of the specimen is less than 13 mm, a maximum load of 8600 KPa will be permitted. The sample after com- pression, shall not show a loss of more than 3 percent of its original mass. ‘83 Exirusion—The est specimen shal be compressed to 50 percent of its Thickness before test with three of ts edges restrained. The amount of extr sion of the free edge shall not exceed 6 mm 5 Recover—The test specimen shall be compressed to 50 percent of its thickness before test. The load shall be released immediately after application ‘Atte end of the 10 minutes aftr release ‘of application ofthe load, the specimen shall have recovered 1 at least 70 percent ofits thickness before test. S41 In cate of failure to comply withthe sbove requirements, the test specimen shall be given three applic: tions of a load sulficient to compress the material 50 percent of is thickness ‘before test. The load shall be released immediately after each application. At the end of 1 hour after the third applic tion, the specimen shall have recovered to at least 70 percent of is thickness before test. 5.5 Densin—The density ofthe a= dy filer material shall be not less tha? 304 kg/m’ 5.6 Water Absorption—A standard expansion joint filler test specimen wit? ‘ I I i + I I i i I I I I I i I I I I i | nRehimmeHe mH EE HE eee Ee See aS ae ee ee EO M213 ‘SPECIFICATIONS FOR MATERIALS 457 four square edges, when submerged horizontally under 25 mm of water at 21 = 3°C shall absorb not more than 15 percent by volume in 24 hours for nomi- nal thickness of 13 mm and over. and 20 percent by volume for all other thicknesses. 41 Asphalt Content—For materials ‘manufactured as desenibed in 4.1.1 and 4.1.2, at least 35 pervent of the finished product shall be asphalt uniformly dis- tributed throughout the cross-section of the material. 6. DIMENSIONS AND PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS. 6.1 The preformed strips shall con- form to the dimensions specified or shown on the plans. Strips of the joint filler which do not conform to the speci- fied dimensions, within the permissible variation of * 1.5 mm in thickness, = 3 mm in depth, and * 6 mm in length, shall be rejected. 7. SAMPLING TAL Size of Samples—Each sample shall consist of sufficient material to provide at leat five test specimens mea- suring 114 by 114 mm. One representa- tive sample, approximately 200 mm", shall be selected from each shipment of 100 m* or fraction thereof. 7.2 Individual samples are to be taken from separate sheets of preformed expansion joint filler. 73. Samples shall be packed for ‘transportation in such a manner that there will be 0 danger of distortion or breakage. & TEST METHODS 8.1 Determine the properties pre- scribed in this specification in accor- dance with T 42. 9, REJECTION AND RETEST 9.1 Material that fails to conform to the requirements of this specification shall be rejected. Rejection should be re ported to the manufacturer and supplier promptly and in writing. Incase of dissat- {sfaction with the test results the manufac turer or supplier may request retesting. 10. PACKAGING 10.1 Preformed expansion joint filler in sheets or strips should be stored and ‘ansported on pallets or suitable flat sur- face to prevent breakage and perma- ‘nent deformation.
