HARRY POTTER AND THE

PHILOSOPHER'S STONE
BY- J.K. ROWLING

MAIN CHARACTERS
■ The story has involvement of many characters like Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore etc. but mainly
it revolves around Harry Potter the protagonist and Voldemort the antagonist.
HARRY POTTER
■ Protagonist Harry Potter has green eyes, disheveled black
hair, and a distinctive lightning bolt-shaped scar on his
forehead. Harry is orphaned as a baby when the dark
wizard Voldemort kills his parents, Lily and James. Curiously,
Lord Voldemort is unable to kill baby Harry, making him
famous throughout the wizarding world as “the boy who
lived.”
■ In light of this fame, which would certainly inflate Harry’s
ego, Dumbledore decides to send the boy to live with
his Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia, who are both Muggles.
Harry thus grows up ignorant of his magical capabilities, the
history of how his parents died, and his own fame. On Harry’s
eleventh birthday, Hagrid informs him of his extraordinary
background, and invites Harry to Hogwarts, the wizarding
school. Initially Harry worries that he is already thought of as
a great wizard due to what happened to him as a child—yet
he doesn’t know the faintest thing about magic.
VOLDERMORT
■ The antagonist of the novel. Voldemort was born
Tom Riddle and dedicated his life to the Dark Arts,
world domination in the form of a wizard-centric
pureblooded society, and the pursuit of
immortality
■ The quest for immortality led Voldemort to create
Horcruxes, or objects that house parts of his soul,
since he cannot truly die while the Horcruxes exist.
Though Voldemort always intended to make seven,
he incorrectly believes that he only made six—
Harry is the unknown final Horcrux, but having his
soul split so many ways means that Voldemort's
soul is too fragile for him to recognize this.

CRITICAL APPRAISAL
■ This book is the best or one of the best fantasy-fiction novels out their.
Surprisingly insides its fiction world it has the perfect balance of realism
and fantasy. We can see this from the beginning that is both the muggle
world and the magic world work separately from each other. In the magic
world we can see all types of things like the Daily Prophet which delivers
new, the ministry of magic which handles affairs related to wizards and so
on. This neutralizes much difference between the realistic and the
fantasy world. Wizards have their own banks, shops , libraries etc. which
isn’t so different from the muggles. Overall this novel is fun to read and
lives up to its name.
■ Also the details of each and every thing in this novel is superb, which
makes the reader actually imagine such a world of wizard and may even
make them believe while reading that it exist.
