Family tree activity

Directions: we will create a family tree using pictures of

yourself and family. The branches of the tree will be
your family members that make up your life. The apples
on the family tree will be the activities, hobbies, foods,
you enjoy.
You can add as many branches (family members) as
you want, and at least 5 apples (activities, hobbies,
foods you enjoy) on your tree. We are going to begin
creating our trees tomorrow please remind your parent
or guardian to email me your family pictures. We will
share our family trees Tuesday May 1st.

My name is Miss Solis I am your child’s 2nd grade teacher. We will be creating a family tree in
class on May 1st I will need any family picture or pictures your child may want to add to his or
her family tree. You may email those pictures to my email: yailinsolis@clarkcounty.edu. I will
print those pictures out and provide them to your child, so they may add them on to their family
tree. The family tree they create will be shared with the class. Please email me the family
pictures as soon as possible, and please make sure to write the students name on the subject
section. I will need the pictures before May 1st. If you have any further questions, please email
me to the email I have provided.

•I am using a visual learning style, because I am showing my students a picture
book and PowerPoint. I also included kinesthetic learning, because their
assignment is a hands on task. My students will be cutting and pasting pieces to
add to their family tree.
• In my lesson plan I implement interpersonal intelligence, because I am teaching
my students “the ability to think about and understand other people” by sharing
their family tree with the whole class.
2. Materials: Book Looking Like Me, power point about my family, interests, hobbies,
favorite food, assignment sheet explaining activity, letter to the students’ parents
explaining what I will require from them, exit slip sheet, markers, construction paper,
scissors, glue, family pictures

3. Instruction- learning process:

• Do first: I will first begin by reading the book Looking Like Me to the class to
spark their interest. Reading this book to the class will approximately take
about 10-15 minutes. I will be asking questions while I read the book in order
for my students to make personal connections with the book.
• Mini lesson: I will present the students with a power point about myself, my
family and a bit of my interests. Then I will show them the activity I want them
to do which is a family tree. My lesson will be dived into three days. The first
day I will be introducing human differences by reading the book Looking Like
Me. Although the book talks about how a child is different I want my students
to think of the ways they are different and alike to the character of this book.
They will need these skills in order to complete the assignment I will give
them. The second day my students will be putting their family trees together
and asking questions if necessary. The last day will be presentation day.

• Guided practice: The students are to complete a family tree. The branches on
the tree will symbolize each family member, and the apples on the trees will be
activities, interests, hobbies, and favorite foods. The family tree will need to
 provide pictures of family members, and pictures of the student’s interests. In
order for the students to have the pictures for this project I will send a note
home one week prior to the assignment. Each parent/ guardian of the student
must email me their pictures, so I can print them out for each student to use. I
will make this an in-class assignment, although it will be based on how well
they can spot the similarities and differences they share with their classmates.

• Independent practice: Each student will draw their tree and apples to put on
their family tree. I will not provide a templet for my students I want to see their
creativity. The students will arrange their pictures as they wish, and present
their final product to the class. The students will talk about their favorite
hobbies, interest, and favorite foods. While a student is sharing their family tree
their peers will be writing down a few similarities and differences they might
share with their peers.

• Exit slip: The exit slip will be the students listing a few similarities and
differences they share with their peers. The exit slip will be done throughout the
presentations of each student. The slip will be turned in at the end off class. In
order to receive full credit, they must fill out all of the exit slip.

5. Reflection: In my lesson plan I am teaching my students to be aware that everyone is

different, however we may all have at least one thing in common. I am making them
aware that all their peers may come from different house holds which may be
composed of single parents, foster, grandparents, and maybe even no parents which is
normal in todays society. I want them to leave my class the day of their presentations
knowing that they might have made a new friend in class, and since it’s the begging of
the school year it is a fun assignment to get them to interact with one another. The
academic skills they will learn are how to analyze, evaluate, and comprehend. This
activity will engage my students as well as their parents/guardians. The strength of my
lesson is that my students will be analyzing themselves as well as their peers and
understanding that everyone is multicultural. The weakness will be if the parents aren’t
involved in the student’s education and I do not receive any pictures from them. Also if
the student does not want to share their family that will be a weakness.
