INTRODUCTION

The aim of this project is to provide a compact as well as

comprehensive overview of cooling system of stator and rotor of
a large Electric Generator.
As we know that in today's world Generator is a key component
of a unit from its availability point of view. Kinetic
energy(rotational) from a Turbine is converted to electrical
energy by a Generator. When mechanical energy does the work
against electromagnetic force and produce Electricity, during this
process high current flow through Stator coils heat is generated in
the Generator stator coils. The stator cooling water system is used
to remove heat from generator armature bars. To maintain
efficient operation and energy conversion, the coils must be
cooled to keep the stator within specified operating limits.
The main theme of discussion of our project is basic information
about electric generator its working and construction, cooling
requirement of stator rotor maintenance of cooling system,
economic aspect behind maintenance of machine and last but not
least recent development on cooling system.
Electric Generator

Definition:
In electricity generation, a generator is a device that converts
motive power into electrical power for use in an external circuit.
Sources of mechanical energy include steam turbines, gas
turbines, water turbines, internal combustion engines, wind
turbines and even hand cranks.

STATORS

The stator is the stationary part of a rotary system, found in

electric generators, electric motors, sirens, mud motors or
biological rotors. Energy flows through a stator to or from the
rotating component of the system. In an electric motor, the stator
provides a magnetic field that drives the rotating armature; in a
generator, the stator converts the rotating magnetic field to
electric current. In fluid powered devices, the stator guides the
flow of fluid to or from the rotating part of the system.

ROTAR

The rotor is a moving component of an electromagnetic system in

the electric motor, electric generator, or alternator. Its rotation is
due to the interaction between the windings and magnetic fields
which produces a torque around the rotor's axis.
Working of Electric Generator

Generators are basically coils of electric conductors, normally

copper wire, that is tightly wound onto a metal core and is
mounted to turn around inside an exhibit of large magnets. An
electric conductor moves through a magnetic field, the magnetism
will interface with the electrons in the conductor to induce a flow
of electrical current inside it.
The conductor coil and its core are called the armature,
connecting the armature to the shaft of a mechanical power
source, for example, a motor, the copper conductor can turn at
exceptionally increased speed over the magnetic field.
The point when the generator armature first starts to turn, then
there is a weak magnetic field in the iron pole shoes. As the
armature turns, it starts to raise the voltage. Some of this voltage
is making on the field windings through the generator regulator.
This impressive voltage builds up a stronger winding current,
raises the strength of the magnetic field.
