ABSTRACT SIMPOSIUM

INFLUENCE OF THE POSRATIONALIST COGNITIVE MODEL FOR EUROPEAN AND

AMERICAN PSYCHOTHERAPY

Carlos Castillo-Corral (Coordinator)

The post-rationalist model was born in the Italian cradle at the end of the 70s, as it
criticizes the “hyper” rationalism of the prevailing cognitivism, however, its proposals can
be seen that they were well ahead of its time, seeing today as the model of Guidano has
influenced different currents of psychotherapy, in addition to having a strong influence in
countries such as the US, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Brazil, without receiving cultural
adaptations. In this symposium, four studies are shown that account for the influence of
the post-rationalist model and Vittorio Guidano's visits to the countries of Chile and
Argentina, and how his visits to those countries generate a whole stream of post-rationalist
schools, in constant dialogue with the Italian research centers through a historical
investigation with several unpublished documents. Through a systematic review of the
literature, a journey through historical and above all theoretical changes will also be
approached, realizing what is the current state of the post-rationalist model, currently
finding different currents that coexist with each other, understanding in the Today, plus the
need to talk about post-rationalist models, as well as a brief overview of these theoretical
differences. Later we will see the changes and influence regarding the attachment theory
for the post-rationalist model, and how the extended post-rationalist model understands
and elaborates it, this having implications and changes in the post-rationalist clinic. Finally,
we end with a post-rationalist proposal for the approach to personality disorders,
understanding the characteristics of the model with a high value for the treatment of these
people who present these pathologies.

A HISTORY OF POSRACIONALISM IN CHILE AND ARGENTINA: 1989 – 1999.

Jorge Barahona-Moore (exhibitor) (jorge.barahona.moore@gmail.com), Center for

Posrationalist Studies (CPS).

The origins of pos-rationalism in these lands are closely related to the trips that the
psychiatrist Vittorio Guidano made to Chile and Argentina between 1989 and 1999. The
main talks and conferences that Vittorio Guidano conducted in Chile and Argentina are
presented chronologically in this article, the role that other psychologists who follow the
model were developing in both countries, as well as the institutions that were created and
the academic impact it had in the decade in which he visited both countries.

The primary sources for collecting data on Guidano's trips are interviews with first
generation pos-rationalist therapists, research citations, and book prologues, they are a
secondary source of information and are part of the bibliographic review process.

An analysis of documentary material was carried out as a tertiary source of data collection.
This research is relevant given the lack of studies that account for the beginnings of the
model in South America. Finally, it is intended to open a space for discussion regarding
the reflections proposed around the main milestones of the installation of the model in
Chile and Argentina, as well as its impact on the therapeutic community.

CURRENT STATE OF THE POST-RATIONALIST COGNITIVE MODEL, UPDATE AND

DIVERGENCES. A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE BETWEEN THE
YEARS 1979 TO 2019.

Background: The post-rationalist cognitive model was born with the Italian neuro
psychiatrist Vittorio Guidano, several decades ago being able to track its beginnings in the
mid-1970s, however, already in 2019 it becomes clear that current research is distanced to
some extent of the original approaches, currently finding different traditions of the model
coexisting. Objective: Describe, categorize and analyze scientific articles, publications
and texts associated with the post-rationalist cognitive model. Method: Through a review
of the scientific literature published between 1979 and 2019, in various databases and
indexed journals, in relation to the post-rationalist cognitive model for a subsequent
thematic analysis. Results: The results are based on the years of publication, journals,
main authors, country of origin of the study, objective, main conceptualizations, study
design, characterization of the participants, measurement instruments used, main results,
conclusions, limitations of the analyzed articles. Discussion: The different publications
and their implications for the current and future development of the post-rationalist
cognitive model, development and historical and conceptual evolution of the model and
current differences in it are analyzed Conclusion: there are numerous changes from the
development of the model to the present, which derives in different currents at present, but
nevertheless the common aspects allow them to be considered within the same model.

Abstract: the objective of this work is to carry out a brief review of the attachment theory
created by John Bowlby and how this influence in the post-rationalism cognitive model, to
which Vittorio Guidano would later give his own understanding. As well as after Guidano's
death, it will be Juan Balbi who continues to delve into attachment theory, its relationship
with the construction of personal identity, affective metaconsciousness and
psychopathology, as well as some changes that he proposes in the understanding of
attachment.

A PROPOSAL FOR THE THERAPEUTIC APPROACH OF PERSONALITY

DISORDERS, FROM THE FRAMEWORK OF EXTENDED POSRATIONALISM

The post-rationalist model has seen significant changes since its conceptualization and
development, however, as a fundamental basis it can be conceptualized as a model of
psychotherapy that works with the person, the experience and therefore the personal
identity. Whose premises and theoretical approaches were quite advanced for their time.
In addition, when considering the fundamental pillars addressed by a first stage of post-
rationalism, developing a complex vision of attachment as a configurator of personal
identity, affectivity as an integrating system of experience, the understanding of the
stabilization of personal identity, the therapeutic stance, as well. such as the incorporation
of the mentalization theory as well as its modification by extended post-rationalism, show
numerous precedents by current research that are shown to be effective for the treatment
of these patients.
