In contrast to Africa, New Guinea, and Europe, native South America has
not been the subject of an extensive analysis of witchcraft and sorcery, ex-
cept perhaps in the Andean region where the interest of the Catholic Church
in the suppression of native religious practice produced ‘‘witch-hunts’’ in
the manner of Europe, which often were inflected with a similar gender bias
(Aigle, de La Perrière, and Chaumeil 2000; Griffiths and Cervantes 1999;
Silverblatt 1987). A few early studies of attack shamanism stand out, how-
ever; for example, the work of Michael Harner (1962, 1972, 1973) and of
Norman Whitten (1976, 1985) among native peoples of eastern Ecuador (the
upper Amazon); as well as Lévi-Strauss (1967), Dole (1973), Goldman (1963),
and even Napoleon Chagnon’s controversial filming of Yanomamo assault
sorcery in the 1973 film Magical Death. Still, even with the appearance of
more recent literature on various aspects of shamanism in general (Brown

1 ‘‘Recent events’’ refers here to the continuing controversy over the publication of Pat-
rick Tierney’s Darkness in El Dorado (2000), which accuses anthropologists of having
been complicit in medical experimentation on Amazonian peoples and of having
seduced them into lewd and destructive behaviors. Ironically Tierney’s only other
published work (The Highest Altar, 1989) concerns ‘‘child sacrifice’’ in the Andes,
and his current journalistic foray (2000) is avowedly something of a penance for past
wrongs.
