Level: Upper intermediate/advanced

Materials:

- A clip from Episode 18 of the 8th season of Modern Family, titled "Mitch and Cam are Lost at the
Airport".

Lesson Objectives:

- Students will be able to provide a summary of the video.

- Students will be able to identify the vocabulary of the previous lesson (airport/travel) within the context
of the video.

- Students will be able to discuss the video with the class and use the airport/travel vocabulary to create
a funny airport story of their own.

Total estimated time: 60 minutes.

Warm-up and Objective Discussion:

- Show the students some pictures related to traveling and airports. Ask them to name what the pictures
represent. Make a vocabulary list with the words they say.

- Share a silly story of you being lost somewhere.

- Explain that we are going to see a clip from a comedy show of two characters being lost in an airport.
Emphasize that, while the video might make for a challenging listening material at first, they're already
familiar with most of the vocabulary in it, which should make things a lot easier.

- Explain that, by the end of today's lesson, students will be able to understand the video and create a
funny airport story of their own.
Estimated time: 10 minutes.

Instruct and Model:

Instruction:

- Explain to the students that the first thing they should try to do is understand the general context of the
video.

- To do that, it helps if they look for keywords that they're already familiar with.

- The characters' body language, facial expressions, and other visual elements might also provide them
with hints as to what's going on.

- They can take notes to help them keep track of what's going on.

Estimated time: 5 minutes.

Model:

- Play the first minute of the video (up to the moment in which Mitch and Cam leave the airplane).

- Pause, and discuss the scene with the students, pointing out visual elements and words that might help
understand the context.

- Provide the students with a brief summary of what happened in the scene.

Estimated time: 5 minutes.

Guided Practice:
- Play the video up to minute 2:34, asking the students to pay attention to the cues you discussed earlier
in order to understand the context.

- Elicit a summary of the events in the video from the students.

- Replay the video, pausing as needed to discuss with the whole class the cues they were able to spot in
order to understand the context.

Estimated time: 5-10 minutes.

Pronunciation Micro Lesson

- Invite students to pay attention to the line "We don't want to go to Dallas", at minute 1:32.

- Use this opportunity to emphasize the connected speech in "want to" and "go to".

- Practice the connected sounds with the students.

Estimated time: 5 minutes.

Independent Practice (Interactive Speaking activity):

- Get the students to discuss some aspects of the video, prompting them with the following questions:

1. What are your thoughts on the unprescribed use of sleeping pills?

2. Do you think that people nowadays are over-reliant on medications in their day-to-day life?
3. What are some alternatives you would suggest to someone having trouble sleeping, and/or who
wants to relax during an airplane trip?

Estimated time: 10 minutes

Assessment (Speaking activity - Airport Story Chain):

- Ask the students to form a circle.

- Ask the students to remind you of all the airport/travel words we've used in this lesson.

- Write the words on the board.

- Ask them to start a story chain. Each student should talk for about one minute per turn, and use at least
one word from the board in each turn.

- If there's enough time, feel free to let the students make a second story unrelated to the airport/travel
theme.
