Standards of hotel classification

In many countries. there is an official body w-ith standard criteria for

classif, ving hotels, but in many others therc is uotle.

There have been attempts at unifl.ing the classification svstem so that it

becomes an internationallv recognized and reliable standard but large differences exist
in the quality of the accommodation and the food rvithin one category of hotel.
sometimes even in the same countn'.

Stars are often used as symbols for classification purposes. Thev are used by
reviewers for ranking things such as movies- TV shous- restaurants. and hotels. For
example. a set of one to five stars is commottlr.emplol'cd to categorize hotels.

Service occupations, by far the largest occupational group- accolrnt for trvo-
thirds of the industry's employment.

Hotels emplor- man\, vou11g r,vorkers and first-time job holders in part-time
and seasonaliobs. Job opportunities should be excellent as a number ofnew hotels are
expected to open.

People travel for a rarietr-of reasons, including tbr r.acations, business. and
visits to friends and relatives For manv of these travellers. hotels and other

many family and business travellers they accommodatc. The industry includes all
tlpes of lodging, from lururious 5-star hotels to youth hostels and RV parks. While
manv provide simpll' a place to spend the night. others cater to longer stays by
providing food sen'ice, recreational activities, and meeting rooms. In 2oa6-
approximately 62.000 establishments provided overnight accommodations to suit
rnany different needs and budgets.

Hotels and motels comprise the rlajorrty of establishments in this industry

and are generallr.' classified as offering either fllll-service or ltrnited service. Full-
sen'ice properties offer a variety of services for their gLrests, but they almost alway,s
include at least one or more restaurant and bevcrage service options-from coffee bars
and lunch counters to cocktail lounges and formal restaurants.

guests access to laundrv and valet serr,.ices. sr,vimming pools. beautl, salons, and
fitness centers or health spas. A small, but growing, number of luxun hotel chains
also manage condominium units in combination rvith their transrent rooms. providing
both hotel guests and condominium ou,ners rvith access to the same services and
amenities.

The largest hotels often have banquet rooms. cxhibit halls- and spacious

other social gathenngs. Conrentrons and business meetings are major sources of
revenue for these properties. Some commercial hotels are known as conference

vacationers and travellers who are willing to sacrifice amenities for lower room prices.

Hotels can also be categorized based on a distinguishing feature or service

provided by the hotel. Conference hotels provide meeting and banquet rooms, and
usually food service, to large groups of people. Resort hotels offer luxurious
surroundings with a variety of recreational facilities, such as swimming pools, golf
courses, tennis courts, game rooms, and health spas, as well as planned social
activities and entertainment.

Resorts typically are located in vacation destinations or near natural settings,

such as mountains, seashores, theme parks, or other attractions. As a result, the
business of many resorts fluctuates with the season. Some resort hotels and motels
provide additional convention and conference facilities to encourage customers to
combine business with pleasure. During the off season, many of these establishments
solicit conventions, sales meetings, and incentive tours to fill their otherwise empty
rooms; some resorts even close for the off-season.

Extended-stay hotels tlpicallv proride rooms or suites uith fully equipped

kitchens. entertainment sr-stems. offrce space r.vith computer and telephone lines,
fitness centers. and other amenrties. Tlpically, guests use these hotels for a minimum
of 5 consecutive nights often while on an ertended work assignment or lenglh-v
vacation or family visit. All-suite hotels offer a living room or sitting room in addition
to a bedroom.

Casino hotels combine both lodging and legalized gaming on the same
premises. Along uith the t1-pical senrces prorided br most flill-service hotels, casino
hotels also contain casinos u-here patrons can \\ager at table games, play slot
machines. and make other bets. Some casino hotels also contain conference and
convention facilities.

houses, off-campus dormitories, and workers' camps. These establishments provide
temporary or longer term accommodations that may serve as a principal residence for
the period of occupancy. These establishments also may provide services such as
hcusekeeping, meals, and laundn sen'ices.

Industry organization. in recent vears. the hotel industry has become

dominated by a ferv large national hotel chains. To the traveller, familiar chain
establishments represent dependabilitl'and qualitl, at predictable rates. Many chains
recognize the importance of brand lo.valtv to guests and have expanded the range of
lodging options offered under one corporate narne to include a full range of hotels
from limited-service, economy-tr,De hotels to luxurv inns..

For those rvho prefer more personalized sen'ice and a unique experience.
boutique hotels are becoming more popular. These smaller hotels are generalll' found
in urban locations and provide patrons good service and more distinctive decor and
food selection.

Also known as B&8. is a term. originating in the United Kingdom. but nou'

A boarding house is different from and has a longer historv than a bed &

people traveling through the area on short stavs.

Generally, gucsts are accommodated in private bedrooms with private

bathrooms, or in a suite of roolns including an en suite bathroom. Some homes have
private bcdrooms lvith a bathroom rvhich is shared u'ith another guest or sometimes
more than one other guest. Breakfast is served in the moming in the bedroom, a
dining room. or the host's kitciren.

B&Bs and guest houses ma-r- be operated either as a secondary sottrce of

income or a primary occupation. Staff can consist of the home's o\\ners and fbmill'
members, or you may find some bed and breakfasts where the home's owners have
hired cleaning, cooking and other staff. A propert-v which hires professional

The capacity of a hotel in terms of the number of rooms is the main yardstick
for the categorization of hotels b-y size.

Small Hotels:

India hotels rvith 25 rooms and less rnay be termed small hotels. Horvever,
abroad, hotels rvith less than a 100 rooms are considered small hotsls

Medium Sized Hotels :

Hotels with 25-100 rooms may be called medium -sized hotels in lndia and
in Abroad, with 100-300 rooms are termed a medium-sized hotels.

Large Hotels:

In India. hotels u'ith 101-300 roofirs are termed as large hotels and in abroad.

Mesa Hotels

Hotels rvith more than 1.000 rooms are called mesa hotels

Chain Hotels
These are groups that have hotels in a number of locations rn Indra and international
venues. In India there are three main Hotel Chain Groups-

The Taj Group of Hotcls

The Oberoi Group of Hoteis
The ITC -Welcome Gror-rp of Hotels

Garden hotels

Manr, hotels have gardens designed by famous garden designers. This came about
because of democratization of society: large mansrorls \\cre built for aristocratic
famihes and in most parls of the lr,orld the idea of a large ertended family livrng under
one roofhas, to say the least" fallen from popularrfi .

93
Eacilly Platruae Chapter - 03 Classification of Star Hotel

Alternative uses have had to be found for castles, palaces, monasteries, mansions
and country seats - and their conversion into hotels has often been successftil. This has
led to the creation of 'garden hotels', many of which are better knolrn for their gardens
than for their modern use as hotels.

Guest Houses

A guest house is a kind of lodging. [n some parts of the world a guest house is
similar to a hostel or bed and breakfast. In other parts of the world guest houses are the
only kind of accommodation available for visitors with no local relatives.

Among the distinguishing features that drstinguish a guest house from a hotel
or bed and breakfast is the lack of full time staff. Bed and breakfasts are usuallr, famil--v
owned, rvith the farnill living on the premises. Hotels maintain a staff presence 24x7.
A guest house on the other hand xill have lrrnited staff presence. Because of the
limited staff presence check in is often br-appointnrent

Inn

Inns are establishments rvhere travellers can procure food, drink, and lodging.
The original functions of an inn are now usually split among separate establishments,
such as hotels. lodges. and motcls. all of ivhich might providc the traditional functions
of an inn but uhich focus more on lodging customers than on other sen'ices: pubs,
which are primarilv alcohol-sen'ing establishn-rents. and restallrants and taverns,
u,hich serve food and drink.

The star classification svstem is a common one for rating hotels. Higher star
ratings indicate more comforts- sen,ice and luxury. In some countries. there is an
official bodr-uith standard critcria for classifying hotels, but in manr-others there is
none.
There have been attcmpts lt unrfr rng the classification s\ stcl-n so that it
becomes an intemationally recognized and reliable standard but large differences exist
in the qualit-1' of the accommodation and the food rvithin one categon' of hotel,
