Activity #1

1.) How will you access the condition of the world in Rizal's time?

 Assessing the conditions of the world in Rizal's time by surveying the situations in different
countries. The condition was that in Rizal's time their were full of wars, conflicts, and
colonization. Different countries have their own reasons for waging wars and conflict, this
includes the hunger for power, misunderstandings, peace, freedom, and more. Just like the
confederates insisted that slaves will remain slaves and Unions who are against the
confederate's beliefs which led to an American Revolution. In the end the Union wins headed by
Lincoln, which in turn, gave freedom to slaves and slavery was abolished. Another example is
China, when Manchu Dynasty faced internal strife particularly the Tai Ping Rebellion and
external problems. Due to misunderstanding regarding the treaty with England and France, they
declared war against China which led to China's defeat. After that, China paid heavy indemnity
to England and France, and Russia took advantage of the situation and claimed portions of large
areas of Manchuria. In conclusion, living in time of Rizal was full of hardships and struggles, and
every country had their gains and losses from these events.

2.) Who were the great writers during Rizal's time? Discuss in your own view in what way they could
have influenced the writings of Rizal?

 The great writers during Rizal's time were Jose Batute also known as “Joseng Sisiw” and
Francisco Baltazar popularly known as “Balagtas”, he was the student of Jose Batute. Balagtas
became well known for his famous masterpiece the “Florante at Laura” which is all about the
song of love, ordeals, and miseries of his native land. In my own view, Rizal got influenced
because of how great and symbolic the stories were made. For example, the Florante at Laura
which symbolizes the love, ordeals, and sufferings of his country which influenced Rizal to write
literary works that also symbolizes love, the abuses and brutalities of Spanish regime towards
his countrymen, and all the miseries of his country as well as to awaken the spirits of the
Filipinos to fight for their freedom.
