Document Development Exposition: Workplace Correspondence

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
I knew planning the email wouldn’t be too hard because I have written tons of emails. The challenge
came when I was trying to write the memo because I have never written one before. After reading a
couple memos I think I got the hang of it and started writing the first draft. One of the challenges I
faced while writing the memo was the word count. I think this was because I felt that I was re-writing
my white paper, so I had to come up with new ideas to write about.

First Draft (for peer editing)

One of the challenges I faced while writing the first draft of the memo was the word count. I think
this was because I felt that I was re-writing my white paper, so I had to come up with new ideas to
write about which took a while. What I learned was that there was a specific outline to follow which
was provided on canvas that I did not know about at first. Knowing this would have made it easier
and I do not think I would have felt like I was just re-writing my white paper. Overall, all my
challenges came from the memo because I have never written one before.

Second Draft (for your packet)

Again, one of the challenges that I faced while writing the second draft of the memo was reaching
the word count of 700 words. I should have slowed down and taken my time like I did while writing
the white paper. However, because this class is condensed and it being summer time I had a little
trouble finding the time to work on this assignment. Going into the final draft I made sure to have
enough time to revise it like I know I can and not to rush.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

Going into the final draft I learned that I made a lot of mistakes. The very first mistake was that I did
not follow the instructions properly. The drafts above were written from an outside source while
they were supposed to be written from an inside source, so I made sure to fix that for the final draft.
I added a subject line to my email, switched to block style, added a buffer, and provided more details
about what I was asking for from the email. For my memo I made even more mistakes; my mistakes
included: putting large and colorful headings, writing from an outside audience, used the wrong
bullet style, and did my recommendations wrong. In the final draft I made sure to write about the
information from inside the company and fixed my headings to just bolded. Additionally, I made sure
the recommendations could be followed from people inside the company. Overall, the workplace
correspondence packet was by far my worst assignment in the class so I made the most redivisions
