Good Times and Hardships Answer Key

Chapter 13 Literacy Skill Practice

Practice: Passage 1: Possible answer: The first passage is from a biography. It is written in the
past tense, describing events of Roosevelt’s life that happened in the past. Passage 2: Possible
answer: The second passage is a letter. It was written the day after the man heard one of
Roosevelt’s radio addresses, which makes it a primary source.
Apply: Answers will vary, but a good example would be a pamphlet describing Social Security
to Americans of that time. It is a primary source since it was written by the government at the
time and describes the program.

present. This time of great creativity became known as the Harlem Renaissance.—DOK 3
40. Possible answer: After the stock market crashed in 1929, people started making runs on

loans. Customers rushed to the banks to withdraw whatever savings they had, causing the
banks to run out of money and close.—DOK 3
41. Possible answer: This is probably the home of a poor farming family during the Great
Depression. The farming industry suffered because of the Dust Bowl and many people were
