CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION

1.1Background:

E-commerce means electronic commerce. It means dealing in goods and services through the

electronic media and internet. E-commerce involves carrying on a business with the help of the

internet and by using the information technology like Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). E-

Commerce relates to a website of the vendor on the Internet, who trades products or services

directly to the customer from the portal. The portal uses a digital shopping cart or digital

shopping basket system and allows payment through credit card, debit card or EFT (Electronic

fund transfer) payments.

A more complete definition is: E-commerce is the use of electronic communications and digital

information processing technology in business transactions to create, transform, and redefine

relationships for value creation between or among organizations, and between organizations and

individuals. The main types of electronic commerce are business-to-business (B2B); business to-

consumer (B2C); business-to-government (B2G); consumer-to-consumer (C2C); and mobile

commerce (m-commerce).

The word ‘shopping’ having originated from the word ‘shop’ refers to the act of buying goods

from shops. It involves a customer browsing the accessible goods offered by one or more

retailers with the intention to purchase the best of products. It is also considered to be a leisure

activity in addition to being an economic one, in some context. Such good might include

household goods of daily use or fancy goods.

1
While there are still shops in market and people buy goods from them, there also has been a

tremendous rise in services like Departmental Stores, Superstores and Marts. Unlike shops that

present a customer with one kind of goods and fall under the category of hardware shops, gift

shops, retails shops, electronic shops, furniture showrooms, clothes shops, kitchen ware etc. a

departmental store, superstore, or a mart present to their customer a variety of goods at a place in

a way it is easier for a customer to meet all their needs. Today, when life has been too office-

bound and ambitious, it has been imperative that one dedicates as little time as possible for

household chorus. This has given rise to people’s willingness to prefer such stores to individual

shops. This is one reason twenty-first century has witnessed a tremendous rise in customers’

willingness and thus in the establishment of such stores.

It has been observed that departmental stores are no longer the only stores providing such

services to the public and own no autonomy in the market like some decades ago. There have

been Superstores and Shopping Malls and Marts. In Nepal’s context itself, rise of such services

have seen a major upliftment in the past decade. Bhatbhateni, established in a number of places

has emerged as a dominant place in the case of shopping in Nepal.

However smaller chains such as Big Mart have also managed to carve its own place in the

changing shopping environment of Kathmandu and has become one of the most desired service

providers these days. Big mart was established in July 2009. Over a span of few years, it has

emerged as one of the growing retail stores in Nepal especially in Kathmandu. Currently there

are 18 stores located all over Kathmandu. Despite fierce competition from other more established

stores such as Bhatbhateni, Saleways and the like which has comparative advantage in terms of

scale and history, Big mart continues to grow.

2
Big Mart is Grocery Super Market Brand. Big Mart Brand has started its journey with free home

delivery services of food and grocery. Big Mart allows to walk away from the drudgery of

grocery shopping and welcome an easy relaxed way of browsing and shopping for groceries.

Discover new products and shop for all food and grocery needs from the comfort of home or

office. No more getting stuck in traffic jams, paying for parking, standing in long queues, and

carrying heavy bags – get everything needed, right at doorstep.

CHAPTER 2. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The methodology used to conduct research for this subject matter is the Qualitative method by

using non-numerical and unquantifiable techniques. This research paper is based on analytical

research where I have used facts, opinions, information that is already available and has also

conducted some fact searching for the relevant topic. I have indulged myself more in secondary

sources of research rather than primary sources.

3.2. Online service:

Big Mart has also developed a mobile app for easy communication with their customers. It

allows customers to browse products, location of nearest store, track their shopping history,

online order and purchase etc. Such technological advancement has also played a role in keeping

up with the current market. Similarly, we can buy genuine Big mart products online from its

official store at Daraz.com.np.

3.3. Payment System:

Electronic Payment System is the alternative to the coin or payment-based cash payment system

to easy the user to make payment for their purchased goods or services over the network or the

internet and in the absence of the physical presence. Present electronic payment system is too far

from ideal payment system because of the higher transaction cost, more fraudulent activities, and

multiple parties are involved in the payment processing simultaneously lacks user’s acceptance,

proper application plans and incompatible standards/specifications.

Present electronic payment system can be divided in two group: Electronic cash and Credit/debit

system or token based and account-based system. Token or electronic cash are like the physical

cash which represent the value and credit/debit, or account-based system does not carry value but

a message to transfer value.

Talking about the payment system of Big Mart, it uses both the cash payment system and

electronic payment system. The payment for the purchase on Big Mart can be done either as cash

6
on delivery or via payment on gateways like E-sewa and PayPal. The payment system of Big

Mart is explained in detail as follows:

i. Cash on Delivery: Nepal being a developing country has a lot to achieve in the

field of electronic commercialization. People still have lack of trust to do their

transactions through pure E-commerce. So, cash on delivery is the best option for

payment from the customers. The order is taken online and then when the goods

are being delivered on the doorsteps, the assigned delivery person receives the

cash payment which is later recorded in electronic basis.

ii. Esewa/Khalti: Customers can buy products or can make a payment from Big

mart using the top digital wallet of Nepal esewa/Khalti. Now, we can check-out

easily with mobile phones while buying goods from Big mart. We have to scan

the QR code and Pay. Also, it is a safer mode of payment than using physical cash

as it limits the transfer of various harmful viruses.

iii. Connect IPS: Customers can buy products from Big Mart using connect IPS.

Customer can use it for purchase of goods of any worth. It is a single payments

platform that allows the customers to link their bank account(s) to enable payment

processor, fund transfer and biller payments. An extended product of Nepal

Clearing House to support citizen-to-government (C2G), customer-to-business

(C2B) and peer-to-peer (P2P) payment transactions directly from/to the bank

accounts. This is available on both web channel and mobile app.

iv. Mobile Banking: Customers can buy products from Big Mart using SMS or

Mobile Banking. Big Mart payment method supports SMS & mobile banking.

7
v. Credit/Debit Card: A credit card is a card that allows you to borrow money

against a line of credit, otherwise known as the card’s credit limit. The credit card

can be used to make basic transactions, which are then reflected on your bill.

Whereas a debit card is tied directly to your checking account. Debit cards use

PIN (Personal Identification Number) to complete the transactions. Big Mart

allows the payment from credit as well as debit card.

3.4. Payment Security System:

Security concerns in electronic commerce can be divided into two broad categories: Client

Server Security, and Data and Message Security. Security threat is a possible danger that might

exploit vulnerabilities in a computer system to breach security and thus cause possible harm.

Client Server Security uses various authentication and authorization methods to make sure that

only valid user and programs have access to information resources such as databases. Whereas

Data and Transaction security ensures the privacy and confidentiality in electronic messages and

data packets.

Talking about the payment security system of Big Mart, it ensures to make their transaction

secure using intranet, and firewall in case of client-server network security while not much

information was given regarding the data and transaction network security.

8
CHAPTER 4. DISCUSSION

4.1 Conclusion:

Today's world is a world of IT (Information Technology) and Beauty. In the age of

Globalization, tremendous progress in science and technology has brought changes into the

world of trade, commerce, banking & marketing. Electronic commerce expands the marketplace

to national and international markets. It decreases the cost of creating processing, distributing,

and retrieving paper-based information. The importance of E-Commerce is very wide because it

reduces the transaction cost. Reduced transaction cost leads to consumer empowerment. In short,

E-Commerce is bringing about a very big change in commerce and marketing. Based on the

findings, the following conclusions can be drawn:

As Big Mart have managed to carve its own place in the changing shopping environment of

Kathmandu and has become one of the most desired service providers these days, most of the

people are aware about it but, only few are comfortable purchasing from Big mart using E-

commerce facilities. The study assessed the reasons for buying from the mart and among the

buyers; most of them choose Big Mart because of following Facilities provided by the Mart.

 100% Quality Products.

 Free Home Delivery

 Cash On delivery

 Organic Foods

 E-Billing

 24X7 Customer Care Service

9
 Stock control and warehouse /distribution program

 All Branded Products under one Roof

It is also found that although Big Mart is gaining popularity among people and has numbers of

fan followings across the country, it still must compete with renowned organizations like Sales

Berry, Bhatbhateni, Sarathi mart etc. Similarly, lunch of mobile application of Big Mart indicates

the desire of Big Mart to be more user-friendly and easily accessible. All these growth in Big

Mart shows the immense potentiality of the prosperity of E-commerce in Nepal. Thus, the

increasing number of people doing their home groceries from online shows the changing attitude

of Nepali people towards the global trend of online commerce.

4.2. Recommendations:

 Big Mart has to analyze various political factors and have to make strategy on those

bases so that could not affect the growth of business. The following things should be

considered by Big mart: There may be a change in tax and vat rate in the new

constitution, different political party may ask for the donations, Due to frequent strikes

the business may not be smooth.

 Technology plays a major part in any type of business industry. The technology is

changing every day and for big investors like Big Mart needs to update all those latest

technologies, which make their and customers work easier and faster. The system or

latest technology will help them to keep the supply smoothly, proper inventory, accounts,

and customer service. Moreover, it will help to store, use, and retrieve data. The major

barrier for the Big mart in technological sector is to implement a new technology. As

10
according to law of Nepal the tax on machinery item is High and due to lack of expert

technician it would be costly to hire a technician from abroad to install the new

technology.

 Environmental issues are one of the top issues in the modern Business world. So, by

doing some contribution to save the environment Big mart can get a good reputation

among the customers. The following things should be considered by Big mart to protect

environment such as environmental protection campaigns, awareness to the people.

 Every organization has a right to perform any kind of business under the law of the

country. Organization should follow the rules and regulation of that country in which

they are performing. Big mart should conduct those businesses, which is legal. Paying

their tax properly, selling genuine and hygiene product is their responsibility. They

cannot set random price. They cannot sell those products, which are restricted by the

government.

 Big mart has somehow fulfilled the customers demand by providing various daily needs

at one place. Big mart should respect the culture and society by not selling those good,

which are against the society. They can make advertisement based on culture to attract

the people of different culture. The society is ready to accept the concept of supermarket

so Big mart can invest more in this sector to make the customer shopping experience

greater.

 Big Mart should try to grab the market share as much as possible by developing new

business policies, strategies and get a place better than its competitors.
