What was the event and where was it held? Which culture was it celebrating?
The event was Global Café at cups in Clinton. It was celebrating all cultures; however,
the majority of the cultures represented were those in Asia. There were many students there from
Who did you meet at this event from another culture? What did you talk about?
I met a girl named Bella, Leah, and Chloe as well as a boy named Gary. The majority of
my conversation was with Leah and Gary. Leah and I talked about what she liked about America
versus what she liked about China. We also discussed the different foods between the two
cultures. During my conversation with Gary we talked about what it is like to learn different
languages. We discussed which languages were more challenging to learn than others.
What did you learn about the other culture relating to the festival/event?
I learned that it is very common for people from Asia to come to America to receive an
education. I also learned that they love aspects of American culture such as television and music.
Another thing I learned is that the different countries in Asia, such as Taiwan, have many places
to go and things to experience about the culture. Leah told me about a night market that she
What did you learn about your own culture through attending this event?
I learned that those from other cultures really enjoy coming to American and
experiencing American culture. Many of the students were telling me how nice they thought

Americans to be, which caught me by surprise. Those who live in the South are often kind and
hospitable, but there are many places in America where the people may not be deemed as
“friendly.” I also learned that American television and music is very popular among other
cultures.
What are the similarities and the differences between this culture and your own culture?
One similarity between my culture and that of China is that both cultures exchange
students in order to learn new languages. For example, I left Mississippi College and went to
Spain to study Spanish. The students I met at Global Café left their colleges to come to America
to learn English and obtain and education. We also have similar taste in television. When I talked
to Gary, he told me about all of the American television programs he enjoys watching. However,
something that is different between the cultures is the food. Many of the foods and dishes in
China are made from noodles, while in America and Mississippi we enjoy frying the majority of
our foods.
I really enjoyed attending Global Café. It was interesting to converse with the different
students and learn about their cultures. I also enjoyed listening to what they thought about
