Meaning of Khaleefa

‫ص بإيما ألبويحبيينا إلبييك يهــلذا ٱلكقبرءءالن يوإإن ككنيت لمن قلبللهۦ للمين ٱليغــلفل ي‬

Allah(swt) says in the Quran that we narrate to you the best of stories. Today we are
going to see an important lesson from the story of Adam(as).

51:56 ‫يويماَّ يخللقنت ٱ لإجنن يوٱ لإإنيس إلاَّ ليبعنبندولن‬

Allah(swt) says that we have not created Mankind and Jinn except to worship Me. The
purpose is worship. This is what the Prophets commanded their Qawm ‫اعبدو ربكم‬

Keeping in mind this purpose of our creation which is Ibadah, let us look into the
story of the creation of Adam(as). Allah (swt) says:

2:30 ‫ض يخ للي لف ة قلاَّلكوـاا ألتيبجيعكل لفييهاَّ يمن ينلفسسند لفييهاَّ يويبسلفنك ٱلنديماء يونيبحنن‬ ‫يوإلذ قلاَّلل يربصيك لليمل ــ ـئللكلة إننى يجاَّلعلل لفى ٱ للأبر إ‬
‫نيسبننح بإيحبملديك يو نلقندنس ليك قلاَّلل إنىـ ألبعلنم يماَّ لاَّ تيبعلنمولن‬

When Allah(swt) decided to create Adam(as), he said to the Angels: “I am going to

place a successive authority(பபரதபநபதப)”. Let us get into depth into this word
“Khaleefa”. Question: How many of us have looked into this ayah? What does the
word “Khaleefa” mean?

Some of the TMQs say: “Mankind generations after generations”. This is not a correct
translation. Even Ibn Kathir who mentions this meaning does not restrict it to such a
meaning rather he gives additional clarifications on the meaning of the word. In fact, if
the meaning was “people reproducing generations after generation”, then it can also
apply to animals and other creatures because even they reproduce generations after
generations.

The literal meaning of the word “Khaleefa” is “a persons who resolves disputes(
‫ )خلفا‬between people”. Now does the word “Khaleefa” refer to any authority that
resolves disputes between people?

The word is used around 9 times in the Qur’an. Allah(swt) says:

‫ض لفٱبحككم بيبيين ٱلناَّإس إبٱ ليحنق يولاَّ تيتنبإإع ٱ ليهيوـى فلينلضليك يعن يسإبيإل ٱللله إلن ٱلللذيين‬ ‫يــيدانوۥند إناَّ يجيعلنيــيك يخ للي لف ة لفى ٱ للأبر إ‬
‫يلضللولن يعن يسإبيإل ٱللله لنهبم يعلذابب يشلديدد بإيماَّ نينسواا يبويم ٱ للحيساَّإب‬

From the above, it is clear that the meaning of the word “Khaleefa” is not just any
authority or ruler that resolves disputes between the people, but he is a
representative of Allah(swt) in the earth i.e he resolves the disputes according
to the commands of Allah(swt). Allah(swt) selectively uses the word to refer to His
Prophet Dawud(as) and not just any authority in general.

Ibn Mas’ud(ra) and Hasan-al-Basri quotes regarding this ayah:

‫ وهذا‬،‫ الذين يلفون أباَّهم آدم ف إقاَّمة الق وعماَّرة الرض‬،‫ أنه أراد قوما يبخكلنف بعضهم بعضا من ولد آدم‬:‫والثاَّن‬
‫قول السن البصري‬.

“The word Khaleefa denotes the nation which succeeds one after another
from the progeny of Adam, who succeed their father Adam in the
establishment of the truth and the ruling of the earth” [Hasan al-Basri]

‫ وهذا قول ابن‬،‫ ومن قاَّم مقاَّمه من ولده‬،‫ وهو آدم‬،‫ جاَّعل ف الرض خليفة ليكلكفنُ ف الكم بي خلقي‬:‫أنه أراد‬
‫مسعود‬

“Allah says I shall make a Khaleefa on the earth i.e one who succeeds Me in
the ruling between my Creation, and he is Adam, and the one who
substitutes his place from his progeny” [Ibn Mas’ud]

‫ إنـي جاَّعل فـي الرض‬:‫فكاَّن تأويـل الية علـى هذه الرواية التـي ذكرناَّهاَّ عن ابن مسعود وابن عبـاَّس‬
‫ وذلك الـخـلـيفة هو آدم ومن قاَّم‬،‫خـلـيفة منـي يـلفنـي فـي الـحكم بـي خـلقـي‬
‫مقاَّمه فـي طاَّعة ال والـحكم بـاَّلعدل بـي خـلقه‬

[‫ الطبي‬/‫]تفسي جاَّمع البياَّن ف تفسي القرآن‬

“.... one who succeeds Adam in the obedience of Allah(swt) and in the ruling with
justice among his creations” [Ibn Abbas]

Imam Qurtubi in his tafsir of the ayah discusses Khilafah in detail, refutes the claims of
Shia that Ali should have been Khaleefa, should Khaleefa be from quraysh?, when
rebellion is permitted against him, etc.

Rasoolullah(saw) confirms this understanding through his hadith when he(saws) says:

‫ قلاَّكلوا‬.‫ يويسيككوكن نخللفاَّء فليلكثكنرولن‬،‫ يوإننه لل نيبإني بيبعلدي‬،‫ ككليماَّ يهليك نيبإيي يخللفنه نيبإيي‬،‫لكاَّنيبت بيننو إبسيرالئيلل تينسونسنهنم اءلنببإياَّءء‬
‫ فلإلن الليه يساَّئلكلنهبم يعنماَّ ابستيبريعاَّنهبم "‏‬،‫ ألبعكطونهبم يحلقنهبم‬،‫فليماَّ تيلأنمنرنياَّ قلاَّلل كفوا بإبيبييعلة اءلنوإل فلاَّءلنوإل‬.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3455

Clash of Civilizations:
‫يوقكلنياَّ ٱبهبإكطواا بيبعنضككبم لبيبع ض‬

Shaytan deceived Adam(as) and Hawwa(as) from Jannah. This is how Shaytan would
mislead Mankind in the earth resulting in corruption of Aqeeda, thoughts and
concepts. There will always be a struggle between Huq and Batil.

When a nation collectively follows the Guidance of Allah(swt), then there will be no fear nor grief
