Topic: Understanding the Self Week 3 Session: 1

1.1 Articulate the differences between the real and ideal self.
1.2 Describe Carl Roger’s concept of incongruence in relation to anxiety and self—actualization
1.3 Reflect on life experiences based on the characteristics of a fully functioning person.
I. Concept Notes
Carl Rogers’s believed that humans have one basic motive that is the tendency to self-actualize, to
fulfill one’s potential and achieve the highest level of “human beingness’. But for a person to achieve
self-actualization they must be in a state of congruence with the ideal self and real self.
Learn more about Carl Rogers’s Theory of Self-Actualization.

“Like a flower that will grow to its full potential if the conditions are right, but which is
constrained by its environment, so people will flourish and reach their potential if their
environment is good enough.
However, unlike a flower, the potential of the individual human is unique, and we are meant
to develop in different ways according to our personality.”
