20 ABSTRACT
21 Standard Method for Determining Sound Transmission Ratings for Masonry Walls (TMS 0302-
22 07) (hereinafter referred to as the Standard) was developed by The Masonry Society’s Standards
23 Development Committee. The Standard provides minimum requirements for rating masonry
24 walls for a sound transmission class, STC, and outdoor-indoor transmission class, OITC, based on
25 field or laboratory testing or based on a calculation procedure. Some of the topics covered
26 include reference standards, definitions and notations, materials, construction, quality assurance
27 and sound transmission class rating. The Standard is written as a legal document in mandatory
28 language so that it may be incorporated into a legally-adopted building code. The Commentary
29 presents background details, committee considerations, and research data used to develop the
30 Standard.

1 1.0 — Scope
2 This Standard provides minimum requirements for rating masonry walls for a sound transmission class, STC, and
3 outdoor-indoor transmission class, OITC. These ratings are for masonry walls in structures erected under the
4 requirements of the legally-adopted building code of which this Standard forms a part. In areas without a legally-
5 adopted building code, this Standard defines minimum acceptable methods to determine the STC and OITC ratings
6 of masonry wall assemblies. These ratings of masonry walls are based on field or laboratory testing in accordance
7 with standard test methods or are based on calculation procedures. All masonry dimensions referred to in this
8 standard are nominal unless indicated otherwise.

1 6.1.3 Seal control joints, expansion joints, and joints between the top of walls and roof or floor
2 assemblies with joint sealant. Fill the joint space behind the sealant backing with mortar, grout, foam,
3 cellulose fiber, glass fiber, or mineral wool. Where roof or floor construction is metal deck, use special
4 shape foam filler strips to seal the top of the wall. For fire rated walls and smoke containment walls, safing
5 insulation shall be used.
6
7 6.1.4 Noncompressible materials that is, mortar and grout shall not be used for fillers for expansion
8 joints, but they shall be permitted in control joints.
9
10 6.2 Surface coatings
11 Seal coarse-textured concrete masonry walls on one or both faces with at least one coat of acrylic latex,
12 alkyd or cement based paint, plaster, or other suitable coating.
13
14
15 7.0 — Sound Transmission Class Ratings
16 The sound transmission class, STC, ratings of masonry walls shall be determined in accordance with Section
17 7.1, 7.2, or 7.3.
18
19 7.1 Laboratory testing
20 The STC ratings of masonry walls based on laboratory testing of an assembly that is representative of the
21 actual wall construction shall be tested and determined in accordance with the requirements of ASTM E 90.
22
23 7.2 Field testing
24 The STC ratings of masonry walls first by field testing the completed construction shall be determined in
25 accordance with the requirements of ASTM E336. The measured values shall then be used to determine the
26 field STC for the masonry in accordance with ASTM E413.
27
28 7.3 Calculation
29 Except for walls having a thickness less than 3 inches (75 mm), the STC ratings for masonry walls shall be
30 determined based on calculation using Eq. 1 for clay masonry or Eq. 2 for concrete masonry. For multiwythe
31 walls consisting of concrete masonry and clay masonry wythes, the sound transmission class shall be
32 determined by Eq. 1 and Eq. 2 utilizing the total of the multiwythes for wall weight, W and then interpolate
33 between the two values according to the relative weights of the two materials in the wall.
34
35 STC = 19.6W 0.230 Eq. 1.
36 SI STC = 13.6W 0.230
37
38
39 STC = 20.5W 0.234 Eq. 2.
40 SI STC = 14.1W 0.234
41
42 7.3.1 Effect of Drywall on STC Ratings of Concrete Masonry Walls
43 7.3.1.1 When STC ratings are determined by the calculation method, drywall attached directly to the concrete
44 masonry shall be assumed to not change the, STC, rating.
45
46 7.3.1.2 The change in the sound transmission class, STC, ratings for 1/2-inch (13 mm) or 5/8-inch (16 mm) thick
47 drywall attached to concrete masonry walls with resilient metal furring or a combination of resilient metal furring
48 and wood furring shall be determined using Eq. 3, 4, 5, or 6 as appropriate. Where sound absorbing material is
49 used, it shall fill the entire furring space. When drywall is applied to both sides of the wall, the cavity depth shall be
50 identical on each side.
51 For drywall on one side of the wall with no sound absorbing material in the furring space:
52 DSTC = 2.8d - 1.22 Eq. 3
53 SI DSTC = 0.11d - 1.22
54
55 For drywall on both sides of the wall and no sound absorbing material in the furring spaces:

6
Standard Method for Determining Sound Transmission Ratings for Masonry Walls
TMS Standard TMS 0302-XX

1 DSTC = 3.6d - 2.78 Eq. 4

2 SI DSTC = 0.14d - 2.78
3
4 For drywall on one side of the wall with sound absorbing material in the furring space:
5
6 DSTC = 3.0d + 1.87 Eq. 5
7 SI DSTC = 0.12d + 1.87
8
9 For drywall on both sides of the wall and sound absorbing material in the furring spaces:
10 DSTC = 11.2 d - 7.37 Eq. 6
11 SI DSTC = 0.44d - 7.37
12 Where:
13 DSTC = the change in STC rating from a bare concrete masonry wall
14 d = the thickness of the furring space.
15
16 8.0 — Outdoor-indoor Transmission Class Ratings
17 The Outdoor-indoor Transmission Class, OITC, ratings of masonry walls shall be determined in accordance with
18 Section 8.1, 8.2, or 8.3.
19 8.1 Laboratory testing
20 The OITC ratings of masonry walls shall be determined based on laboratory testing of an assembly that is
21 representative of the actual wall construction tested in accordance with the requirements of ASTM E 90 and
22 calculated in accordance with ASTM E 1332.
23 8.2 Field testing
24 The OITC ratings of masonry walls shall be determined by first field testing the completed construction in
25 accordance with the requirements of ASTM E 966. The measured values shall then be used to determine the field
26 OITC for the masonry in accordance with ASTM E1332.
27
28 8.3 Calculation
29 Except for walls having a thickness less than 3 inches (75 mm), the OITC ratings for masonry walls shall be
30 determined based on calculation using Eq. 7 for clay masonry or Eq. 8 for concrete masonry. For
31 multiwythe walls consisting of concrete masonry and clay masonry wythes, the outdoor-indoor
32 transmission class shall be determined by Eq. 7 and Eq. 8 utilizing the total of all the wythes for wall
33 weight, W and then interpolate between the two values according to the relative weights of the two
34 materials in the wall.
0.224
35 OITC = 17.4W Eq. 7.
0.224
36 SI OITC = 12.2W
37
38
0.290
39 OITC = 14.7W Eq. 8.
0.290
40 SI OITC = 9.28W
