IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION

THROUGH THE USE OF BASA LEVELED TEXTS

II - Background of the Study:


Reading comprehension has been considered as one of the facilitating factors for an individual to
become life-long learners and have a successful in life. Division of Bohol is very fortunate that Basa Pilipinas
Program has poured out resources and capability building activities to teachers and school heads to improve
reading skills of primary grade learners.
One of the issues raised during the Division Monitoring and Evaluation for Adjustment (DMEA) by
Basa Pilipinas Program Coordinator in the Division of Bohol is the non-utilization of Basa materials by
teachers who received the said resources. Reading comprehension of the learners has been measured with the
National Achievement Test, Phil IRRI and Oral Reading Verification Tests Results.
School year 2014-2015 Language Assessment for Primary Grades (LAPG) was administered. Results
were not yet provided by proper authorities but it is worth mentioning that Bohol is one of the few divisions
that were included in the Basa Pilipinas Program. This is the main reason why, the researcher was propelled in
conducting this action research to identify results on the improvement on the reading comprehension of the
learners in relation to the use of Basa Leveled Texts.

III - Statement of the Problem:


               This action research tried to identify the reading comprehension results of the learners in relation to
the Basa Pilipinas Program leveled text utilization with grade three learners in Mabini District, Division of
Bohol, school year 2015-2016.

IV- Significance of the Study:


       The study will be deemed important for the proper appreciation of improving reading comprehension
through the use of leveled texts provided by Basa Pilipinas Program especially to;
The pupils, this study may lead to better interest and develop good study habits among learners;
The teachers, this study may increase their mindfulness in identifying learning activities for their
primary grade learners. This may also serve as motivating factor to find interventions and approaches for the
improvement of reading instructions;
          The parents, this study will serve as awareness in identifying their children’s needs in improving
reading comprehension;      
            The school administrators, district and education program supervisors, this study would provide
needed data to support in the provision of technical assistance to teachers. This will be realized after the
conduct of monitoring and supervision of the teachers under their care.
The local government units, this study would be beneficial to them in providing funds for the purchase
of additional leveled texts for their constituents, the young learners.

V- Scope of the Study


This study covered all the grade three teachers in Mabini District, Division of Bohol, school year 2015-
2016.
Phil IRRI Results would be the basis in identifying reading comprehension among learners with the use
of Basa Pilipinas leveled texts.

VI - Research Design
       A. Methodology
                    This study employs the pre-experimental one shot case study. According to De Jesus 
the pre experimental one shot case study is a design in which a single group is only studied once,
subsequent to a treatment
B. Sampling Design
       Purposive sampling was employed in selecting teacher - respondent of the study. The
teachers who were selected were the teachers handling grade three learners for the school year 2015-
2016. 
      C. Description of Instrument and Data Gathering Form.
           The researcher utilized Phili IRRI pretest and posttest results in conducting this action research.
Frequency in the utilization of the resource was also considered.
