Types of Bearings
Journal (sleeve) Bearings (plain bearings) –
•load is transferred through a thin film of
lubricant (oil).
•Such as bush bearings.
•In which the rotating shaft has a sliding contact
with the bearing which is held stationary .
•Due to large contact area friction between
mating parts is high requiring greater
lubrication.

Advantages and disadvantages of the plain
bearing

Classification of ball bearings.
1. According to contact
– Deep groove (Conrad) bearing
– Angular contact bearings
2. According to load direction
– Radial bearings
– Trust bearing
3. According to no of rows
– Single row ball bearing
– Double row self aligning ball bearing
4. Instrument precision bearings

Classification of roller bearings
1. According to load direction
– Radial bearing
– Thrust bearing
2. According to shape of rollers
– Cylindrical bearings
– Tapered roller bearings
– Spherical bearings
– Needle roller bearing

Ball Bearings
a. Deep groove (Conrad) bearing
• Inner and outer rings are provided with deep grooves.
• Load capacity is limited by the number of balls.
• Primarily designed to support radial loads, the thrust
capacity is about 70% of radial load capacity
13
Ball Bearings
b. Angular contact bearings (AC)
The centerline of contact between the balls and the raceway is at an
angle to the plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
16
Roller Bearings
b. Spherical bearings
Bearing design uses barrel shaped rollers. Spherical roller
bearings combine very high radial load capacity with
modest thrust load capacity and excellent tolerance to
misalignment.
Roller Bearings
Roller bearings have higher load capacity than ball bearings, load is
transmitted through line contact instead of point contact.
Straight cylindrical roller Needle type

c. Needle roller bearing:
•It use small diameter of rollers.
•They are used for radial load at slow speed
and oscillating motion.
•They have the advantage of light weight and
occupy small space.
•They are used in aircraft industry, live tail stock
centers, bench-drill spindles, etc.
Thrust Bearings

Bearing Use -
• Caged bearings are used for engine
applications & equipments where
rotational speed is excess of approx.
100revolution pre minute.
• Ball bearing – accept both axial &radial
loads.
• Angular contact bearings – Accept radial
loads & axial loads in one direction.
• Thrust bearings – axial loads
