SUMMARY OF LEARNING METHOD FOR ESP

Method of learning is the strategy or technique of teaching a particular material and the
process of explaining material to the students. Learning method can be students centered or teachers
centered and the usage of them depends on how the teachers design how the learning process will be
conducted. There are five kinds of method that can be used for teaching ESP, namely, task, role play,
project work, case study, and oral presentation. Task is used for the students as one of their activities
in the classroom which will engage them more with the material. There are four key methodologies
for giving task for students which are reality control, non – triviality, authenticity, and tolerance of
error. Role play or simulation is the activity that students and teachers use in the learning process to
make the students experience any particular situation that related to the topic or material. Using role
play there are two roles that should be considered which are the role of teacher and the role of
students, the role of teacher that the teachers should guide the students of what they have to do in the
simulation and how they can do that and the role of the students is that following the teacher’s guide.
Project work is a big task that the students have to do before they end the semester and teachers
should give a little bit more time because this task need a lot of time to be done. There are 4
characteristics of project work which are creating the learning environment, giving the students a
chance to create a product, giving students chance to do a research for doing the task, working in
different language skills at the same time to complete the project. Case study is a study that refer to
the real life situation and this study require to teach students the micro linguistics elements that
related to the topic such as vocabulary and grammar. There are 6 stages in this study, namely,
reading the case, identifying the problem, defining priorities and limitation, looking for alternative
solutions, choosing the best linguistic way to present it, and preparing the action plan. Oral
presentation is the most common activity in teaching and learning process in ESP because this
method can be used with the other method such as project work, so that, students will have oral
presentation in order to explain about their project. This method is beneficial to students because this
method of learning can make students improve their speaking skills.
