DEFINITION OF CONTEXTUAL LEARNING

Contextual learning is based on a constructivism


theory of teaching and learning. Learning takes place
when teachers are able to present information in such
a way that student are able to construct meaning based
on their own experiences.
Procedures of Contextual Learning

Relating
Teachers link a new
concept to something
completely unknown
to students.
Experiencing
Students learn through
experiencing, exploring,
discovering and
inventing.
Applying

Applying can be defined


as learning by putting
the concepts to use.
Students can implement
the concept when they
are engaged on problem
solving activities.
Cooperating
Students work in
a group to learn
the material and
get deeper level
of understanding.
Transferring
Teachers’ role is expanded creating
a variety of learning experiences for
the students to transfer the
knowledge to the students rather
than memorizing.
Example of Contextual Learning

Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) happens


by teachers relating the subject matter content to
real world situations, and motivate students to
make connections between knowledge and its
application. For example, the use of contextual
learning in writing recount text.
Conclusion
Contextual teaching and learning refers to the latest
research on effective teaching and student learning.
These approaches produce educational experiences that
are motivating and refreshing for all students because
they study at a higher level. As a result of CTL,
students are better equipped for a new economy. They
are better at retaining knowledge and skills, there by
increasing students' academic and career-technical
achievements.
