LEARNING TASK 1.1

1. What is an integrated curriculum?

An integrated curriculum implies learning that is synthesized across traditional

subject areas and learning experiences that are designed to be mutually
reinforcing. This approach develops the child's ability to transfer their learning to
other settings.

2. How does an integrated curriculum differ from the unidisciplinary

curriculum of regular courses?

An integrated curriculum allows children to pursue learning in a holistic way,

without the restrictions often imposed by subject boundaries.
An integrated curriculum implies learning that is synthesized across traditional

reinforcing. This approach develops the child’s ability to transfer their learning to
other settings.

3. What is an integration?

Integration, in the most general sense, may be any bringing together and uniting
of things:

4. How is curriculum integration undertaken?

It is undertaken by combining, linking and various knowledge to produce a

complete learning process facilitates by teacher.

5. What are the results of curriculum integration?

The integrated curriculum approach is successful in making students more

aware of content area connections, challenging students, providing a learning
environment supporting academic and social needs, dissolving the boundaries
among the disciplines, and fostering stronger student/teacher relationships.

6. What are the theories supporting curriculum integration? Explain each one.

These multiple approaches for integrating curriculum are based on different

learning theories that provide underlying organizing principles such as discipline-
based learning, cognitivism, behaviorism, constructivism, complexity theory, and
spiral learning.
*Discipline- based learning- A discipline-based curriculum approach characterize
teaching practice within one subject and encourages teachers for specialization, depth
of content knowledge, and integrity to the conventions of their discipline.
*Cognitivism- is a learning theory that focuses on the processes involved in learning
rather than on the observed behavior. As opposed to Behaviorists, Cognitivists do not
require an outward exhibition of learning, but focus more on the internal processes and
connections that take place during learning.
*Behaviorism- is a theory of learning based on the idea that all behaviors are acquired
through conditioning. Conditioning occurs through interaction with the
environment. Behaviorists believe that our responses to environmental stimuli shape
our actions.
*Constructivism- is an approach to learning that holds that people actively construct or
make their own knowledge and that reality is determined by the experiences of the
learner
*Complexity theory- is an interdisciplinary theory that grew out of systems theory in
the 1960s. It draws from research in the natural sciences that examines uncertainty and
non-linearity. Complexity theory emphasizes interactions and the accompanying
feedback loops that constantly change systems.
*Spiral learning- is a teaching method based on the premise that a student learns more
about a subject each time the topic is reviewed or encountered. The idea is that each
time a student encounters the topic, the student expands their knowledge or improves
their skill level. Also see Mastery Learning.

7. How does curriculum integration improve basic education?

Integrated teaching and learning processes enable children to acquire and

use basic skills in all the content areas and to develop positive attitudes for
continued successful learning throughout
the elementary grades. Integration acknowledges and builds on the
relationships which exist among all things.

LEARNING TASK 1.2

WRITE BELOW TWO DEFINITION OF AN INTEGRATED CURRICULUM.
1. An Integrated Curriculum is a curriculum developed to break down barriers between
disciplines and make learning more meaningful to students.

2. An integrated curriculum is described as one that connects different areas of study

by cutting across subject-matter lines and emphasizing unifying concepts. Integration
focuses on making connections for students, allowing them to engage in relevant,
meaningful activities that can be connected to real life. Can you imagine how an
integrated curriculum can benefit your students? Understanding the benefits and how to
effectively integrate curriculum can help teachers and students become more
successful in the classroom.
LEARNING TASK 1.3
WRITE INSIDE THE CHART HOW EACH OF THE FOLLOWING LEARNING
THEORIES SUPPORTS CURRICULUM INTEGRATION.

1.ExperientialLearning Experiential education integrates students' academic

studies with opportunities for direct learning. Through
experiential learning, the student must make decisions
that are real rather than merely think about a situation or
case. In this article, the authors make the case for
mandatory experiential programs in all major areas
within the business curriculum. They explore the theory
behind experiential learning, explore the role of
experiential programs in the business curriculum, and
discuss the outcome of integrating job shadowing into
the curriculum of a regional university business course.
2.Multiple Intelligences The multiple intelligence theory can draw students
back into learning. Using the
different intelligences to teach a concept allows each
of your diverse learners a chance to succeed
at learning. ... Teaching to a student's strength helps
increase learning success.
3.Contructivism They use curriculum integration as an effective tool
for teachers to implement integrated STEM education
in their classrooms. The concept of integration is
complex and challenging; curriculum integration is
more than simply putting different subject areas
together in the same lesson.
Allows students to be active and autonomous learners.
Using constructivist strategies, teachers are more
effective. They are able to promote communication and
create flexibility so that the needs of all students can be
met.

LEARNING TASK 1.4

Answer the question on the lather web
What is the common elements of an integrated
curriculum?

1. A combination of subject or learning area.

2. An emphasis on project.

3. Relationships among concepts.

4. Thematic units as organizing principles

5. Sources that go beyond textbooks

6. Flexible schedules

7. Flexible student grouping

LEARNING TASK 1.5
Write a statement about the common elements of an integrated curriculum.
Elements Integrated into the Curriculum. In addition to providing the requisite curriculum
components (nature of the discipline, rationale, philosophy, aim, structure, student
learning outcomes and standards), curriculum documents incorporate the
following elements.
curriculum integration may be an effective element in making education both ... Many of
the articles are written by classroom teachers or by researchers who have ... when
students work on "real" problems-a common element in integrated.

LEARNING TASK 1.6

Write inside the chart a brief description on how integration takes place in each
level.

CURRICULUM INTEGTRATION
Level 1 This is the traditional organization of curriculum and classroom instruction.
In this level the teachers plan and arrange the subject through a specific
Scope and sequence which uses a topic outline format.
Level 2 In this level of integration the themes in one discipline are not necessarily
planned to correspond with the themes in another. Neither are the
teachers are expected to teach them simultaneously.
Level 3 At this level of integration when the class is studying two or more core
learning areas or subjects around a common theme like natural calamities”
From one or two teachers.
Level 4 Teachers teaching different subjects collaborate on a common theme and
its content. It is at this level when discipline boundaries begin to dis appear
As a teacher address a common theme either teaching alone or with other
teachers.
Level 5 In this level of integration the content and discipline boundaries are blurred
During the teaching –learning process. Simply put , the boundaries
between or among disciplines are totally dissolved.
