BSED 1-1
BUILDING AND ENHANCING NEW LITERACIES ACCROSS THE CURRICULUM

Module 8
Questions for Discussion (pg. 66)

1. What is an integrated curriculum?

An integrated curriculum implies learning that is synthesized across traditional subject
areas and learning experiences that are designed to be on making connections for students,
allowing them to engage in relevant, meaningful activities that can be connected to real life.
Also, it accommodates a variety of learning styles/ theories and multiple intelligences.
In the present time, the subjects in curriculum should not be taught one by one but rather
become integral towards total development of the child.

2. What are the different approaches, models, and types of curriculum integration?
There are three approaches of curriculum integration and these are multidisciplinary,
transdisciplinary, and interdisciplinary. In multidisciplinary approach, it focuses primarily on
different disciplines. Teachers who employ this approach may create standards from the
disciplines within a theme. While in interdisciplinary approach, the discipline is identifiable
but they assume less importance than in the multidisciplinary approach. And the teacher
organizes and capsulize the curriculum around common learning across discipline to
emphasize interdisciplinary skills and concepts. And in transdisciplinary approach, teachers
design a curriculum wherein they can address student needs and concerns.

3. How can you apply the integration along with multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and
transdisciplinary approaches?
We can apply integration in the classroom through combining different subject areas and
then teaching the students in relation to a singular theme or an idea. In that way, integrating
the curriculum in classrooms will improves student achievement and leads to an increase in
student standardized scores.

4. Which curriculum integration approach would best suit to the different types of
learners in diverse classroom context?
In my opinion, it would be the transdisciplinary approach. Since this approach somehow
focuses on the different types of learners in classroom and addressing student needs and
concerns. This approach also allows the learners to make connections among different
subjects by solving social problems and answering open-ended questions.

5. In what lessons or course disciplines is integrated curriculum most appropriate?

I think it would be the subject MAPEH, since it is a combined subject which consists of
subjects like music, arts, physical education, and health. These subjects are important for the
reason that it culturally enriched students and help the students to boost their self-esteem.
Research Analysis and Implications (pg.67-68)

Analysis: How does integrated curriculum impacts student’s comprehension of expository texts?
It impacts the students in a way that it helps them to increase their comprehension of expository texts and
their ability to make personal connections, with the material being read across an integrated curriculum.
Also, it improves their different abilities towards their performance in the school.
Implications: How can professional development for teachers respond to enhancing an integrated
curriculum toward a better comprehension of students?
The teachers respond toward a better comprehension of their students through providing their students a
curriculum that is connected across the disciplines and at the same time, enabling them to increase their
comprehension of expository text.
