“Media Literacy”
Question for Discussion:
1. What is media literacy? Explain.
 Is the ability to analyze, understand information, knows how to use it
properly and the ability to create and spread correct information.

2. What are the important roles of media literacy?


 The important roles of media literacy is that it opens the eyes of everyone
about the truth, able to think critically and deeper about that information,
able to recognize and understand what the author want to deliver and
lastly able to know how to see the primary and secondary sources.

3. Discuss media information literacy (MIL), it’s aspects and dimensions.


 Media information literacy is the attitudes and skills to analyze and convey
information in a creative and acceptable ways that aims to educate and
give awareness to any social or global issues. The aspects of media
information literacy is to identify, find, evaluate, apply and acknowledge
the different sources of information.
 There are seven dimensions of media information literacy according to
Shapiro and Hughes (1996). 1st one is the Tool Literacy, wherein it talks
about the important of technology as a tool in educating and conveying
information. Second, is the resources literacy, wherein here it talks about
the ability to understand the different methods of information resources.
Third, is the social-structural literacy, here it talks about the importance of
information gathered to the life of others and on how it affects their day
to day life. Fourth, is the research literacy, wherein here it talks about the
ability to understand and use different websites as a tool needed by the
researchers in gathering information. Fifth, is the publishing literacy, and
here it talks about the different formats when publishing a work or
information. Sixth, is the emerging technlogy literacy, wherein it is the
ability to adapt and know how to use emerging innovations in information
technology and lastly the crictical literacy, it is the ability think deeper and
critics any information gathered wether it is true or fake.

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of media?


 The advantage of media is that it delivers and educate others about the
information faster but it is a place wherein prone to any mislead or fake
information.

5. How can you integrate MIL in the curriculum across disciplines? Cite examples.
 As a 21st century learners and soon to be a teacher i can use MIL in class
by giving them activities such as information or video analysis, identify
wether the information came from primary or secondary sources, discuss
the importants of media and lastly by making them create media.

Research Analysis and Implication:


Analyze the following research abstract and cite it’s implication to teaching-learning.
“Study of digital media literacy of the 5th and 6th grade primary students in
Beijing, Zhang (2016)”
 Analysis
 It can be seen that at the young age they were able to to use any
technical skills and understand digital media literacy as it shows
there that they were greatly influenced about what they gathered
in digital media.
 Implication
 Using digital media nowadays can have a positive and negative
effects to the learning of the students. Positive in a way wherein it
allows the learners to gather information faster but negative
because as we all know it is a place also of fake information
wherein it may mislead the

Advantages:

Educate people, entertainment, serve as platforms, raise awareness and showcase their different hidden talents

Disadvantages:

Can lead to isolation/individualism, place of scam, R18 contents, can be addictive and can ruin reputation.
