The Persecution of Christianity by Roman Authorities and
Legalization of Christianity

Persecution by Roman Authorities

- Christians were regularly persecuted by the Roman
authorities for nearly 300 years.

- They preferred to identify one another through hidden

signals, such as the fish. The Greek word letters for fish,
ichthys, represented a "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior"
anagram. Other early Christian signs included a boat or an
anchor.

- The organization started to grow as the Christianity

developed.
Small Christian communities secretly met in the believers’
houses, where they shared a meal and worshiped.
These developed into the first churches.

- Some leaders were given positions of responsibility within

each church.
Presbyters were appointed, or priests, to be in charge of a
church congregation.
Deacons were appointed to carry out charitable works in
each church.
Every city or area was appointed a bishop to supervise what
was being taught in the churches there.

- Peter, Paul, and several of the apostles were executed

during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero (54–68 CE).
In 91 Emperor Domitian ordered attacks throughout the
empire against Christians.

- Christianity was declared illegal under Marcus Aurelius’

reign, in order to appease the pagan gods of Rome
following a revolt by the Parthians. Other especially
extreme persecutions of Christians occurred under Valerian,
about 257, and Diocletian, between 303 and 313However,
the fact that Christians were so dedicated to their belief in
Jesus that they wanted to die for the faith made others
curious.

- As they learned more about Christianity, many people

converted. “Martyrs’ blood is the foundation of the church,”
wrote by a Roman called Tertullian, who in 197 became a
Christian.

- But early in the fourth century Christianity’s standing in

Roman society would change dramatically

Constantine Legalizes Christianity

- As Diocletian became Rome’s emperor in 284 the empire

faced extreme military and economic troubles. He
introduced a reform program which included the separation
of the empire into divisions of the East and the West.

- Diocletian took charge of the eastern half of the empire,

and appointed a Western governing associate. Finally he
established places for two lesser (Caesars) leaders who
served under the emperors of the East and the West. This
established a form of government called the Tetrarchy, in
which four rulers (the two tetrarchs from the east and two
from the west) had much power.

- . After the reign of Diocletian was over in 305, a power

struggle broke out among the rulers of the empire.
Constantine, the son of one of the western tetrarchs,
ultimately emerged as the supreme ruler of the Roman
Empire after a long struggle. Constantine ascribed the
divine influence to his performance.

- Before an important battle in 312, Constantine saw in the

sky a message that he believed Jesus Christ had sent, and he
ordered his soldiers to place the symbol XP (the Greek
letters Chi and Rho, Christos’ first two letters) on their
shields.

- Winning the battle has helped Constantine conquer Rome

and given him control over the empire’s western half.

With gratitude Constantine, accompanied by the east

tetrarch Licinius, issued the Milan Edict in 313 which
proclaimed that the Roman Empire would not discriminate
against any religion and would cease persecution of
Christians.

This gave Christianity greater credibility and led the

Christian population to exponential growth.

- Constantine did not defeat his opponent Licinius until 324

and became the supreme emperor.

Constantine soon set up an Eastern city, founded on the site

of an ancient Greek town called Byzantium.

The area, renamed Constantinople, was closer to the most

densely populated areas of the empire than Rome, and
became the imperial capital in 330 AD.
What exactly is Christianity?
- Christians (followers of the Christian faith) were
followers of Jesus Christ, who was born in a region of the
Roman Empire. He became well-known about the year 26
CE because he claimed to be the son of God. As a result of
