Three general characteristics of the study of linguistics units
1. Structural linguist ignores meaning because they consider more on the difference of
the structure than the meaning
2. The linguist consider that units are contrastive because they realize that not only the
meaning is difference but also the difference in sound is also important to know.
3. Units are defined by composition and distribution. Units are defined by composition
because they are based on the level. Units are defined as having the systematic nature
of language, there are two distribution, namely, parallel distribution and
complementary distribution.
