APPLICATION FOR SCHOOL FEE EXEMPTION

A parent is liable to pay school fees unless he or she has been exempted from payment in terms of the
South African Schools Act 84 of 1996. Parents who, therefore, cannot afford to pay school fees may
apply for school fee exemption. Granting of exemption is subject to procedures and criteria governed by
the Act and Regulations.
A public school may by process of law enforce the payment of school fees by parents, who are liable to
pay in terms of section 40 of the Act and should a parent pay school fees which are due and payable.
The following criteria and rules are applicable when applying for school fee exemption:
1. A single parent (widow, for example) alternatively both parents with a single application
(married, for example) or both parents with separate applications (divorced, for example) can
apply for school fee exemption.
2. The applicable exemption percentage will be calculated on a sliding scale and can be total or
partial exemption. In the case of automatic exemption, satisfactory evidence must be provided
that a learner has been formally placed in care. In the case of conditional exemption,
information indicating a parent’s inability to pay school fees due to personal circumstances must
be provided.
3. Application for fee exemption are for school fees and additional monetary contributions only
and does not include boarding fees.
4. A new application must be made annually. The school will provide a link to the online exemption
system and a parent must register to have access to the website. The application form must be
submitted 14 days from date of registration.
5. Gross income will be considered when assessing an application. Income includes gross salary
(​the​ ​cost to company remuneration​), wages, pension, bonuses, overtime, funds received as a
beneficiary of an estate or trust, dividends and / or interest received on investments or any
revenue received from any form of business undertaking, including rental income.
6. When all necessary information is completed online and uploaded onto the system, a parent
will be able to download and print the application. The printed document must be signed in
front of a commissioner of oath to declare that all information is true and correct. The original
application with required supporting documents must be submitted at the school’s finance
office before the exemption process can be finalised.
7. If false information is supplied the parent will be liable for payment of any exemption received.
The governing body may, if deem fit, institute legal and or criminal action for perjury.
8. The finance office, an educator, the governing body or the principal can assist a parent in making
the application and may verify any information or document provided.
9. A parent who qualified for school fee exemption must inform the school, in writing, of any
changes to their financial situation. This will result in the review of the application and may the
School Governing Body reconsider the decision to grant exemption and amend the amount that
the parent must pay from the date on which the change took place.
10. A parent who has received exemption can make voluntary contributions to the school fund.
11. Parents must attempt to apply for fee exemption before 28 of February of every year.
 12. The finance office must inform the parent of the application outcome within 7 (Seven) days of
coming to a decision.
13. A parent who is dissatisfied with the decision of the School Governing Body may, in writing and
within 30 (THIRTY) days after receipt of the notification of that decision, appeal to the Head of
the Department against the decision.
The following information must be provided to ensure that the application form is completed correctly:
1. parent detail: name, surname, id number, email address, mobile number, physical address,
postal address
2. learner detail: name, surname, id number, grade, school fees for the year, date of admission,
school fee account number, family code, learner number (if applicable)
3. biological dependent detail: name, surname, id number, learning institution, grade
4. financial detail: all income and expense detail, other business interests (company registration
number, share percentage, role, address)
5. reason for applying for school fee exemption
The following certified documents must be annexed to the application form and handed in at the
finance office for the application to be processed:
1. Copies of ID document of parent or caregiver
2. Learner’s birth certificate
3. Bank statements (3 months)
4. Salary advice (3 months)
5. Own business financial statements
6. Proof of all expenses
7. Deed of Sale or Lease Agreement
8. Divorce settlement agreement (if applicable)
9. Court order for sequestration, liquidation, administration, debt review, administration,
maintenance, foster care (if applicable)
10. Unemployment affidavit (if applicable)
11. Death certificate (if applicable)
12. Any other documents the School Governing Body may request
13. Bank account verification document

We only have one income between the two of us as namely Mattheus Jacques du bruyn is unemployed and not been able to contribute at all towards any expences. My father
in law Jacob Daniel du bruyn provides us with a place to stay. I cannot afford to pay school fees and am battling to pay everthing which has resulted in me having to us my Pick
n Pay food account which is now maxed and so i have also had to borrow money from my work. Please consider full school exemption for Malcolm and Keaton du Bruyn, ref
school acc nrs: 5525 & 5524. Your kind consideration will be appreciated.
